Tea Party Protest Turns Violent (VIDEO)

What's Your Reaction:

Tea Partiers tussled with counter protesters during at least two of the nationwide anti-immigration Tea Party rallies on Saturday.

In Ft. Lauderdale, several Tea Partiers brawled in the street with counter protesters from the Florida Chapter of Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER).

The video, which was shot by Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), shows two Tea Partiers with their own video cameras making their way through the area designated by police for counter protesters from ANSWER. As the Tea Partiers reach the end of the ANSWER group, one of the Tea Partiers can be seen having an argument with one of the ANSWER counter-protesters when that counter-protester pummels him with his sign.

The brawl quickly spilled into the road, with some joining in and some trying to break up the fight. By the end of the incident, both Tea Partiers were on the ground, being battered by counter-protesters. 62 year-old Dave Caulkett of Floridians for Immigration Enforcement says he was kicked in the face just before being let up from the ground.

Police did not intervene on the video, but sirens can be heard in the background. It is unclear why no police were present to keep the peace between the two opposing groups.

Video of the incident was posted by ALIPAC, an immigration control organization. It includes captions depicting the Tea Party perspective of the incident:

Friday, the day before the Tea Party rally, ANSWER sent out a provocative email, which is now being cited and criticized extensively in conservative blogs. The email included the following statement:

Racism is like anything else in this world: in order to make it fall, you must smash it! That is why we are calling on all people to come out tomorrow, to organize a militant confrontation with the so-called 'tea baggers.' Beating back these forces will require us to organize together, take the streets, fight the racists wherever they show their faces and drive them out of every community.

Also on Saturday, at the corresponding anti-immigration Tea Party rally in Phoenix, a Tea Partier got into a scuffle when a Neo-Nazi tried to unfurl a banner with Adolf Hitler painted on it. The incident was also caught on video:

UPDATE (Wed, Nov 18): HuffPost received a response from ANSWER last night. ANSWER alleges that the video tape is incomplete and that one of the Tea Partiers shown in the video came to the police-designated ANSWER area and attacked an ANSWER protester a few minutes before the tape begins. ANSWER also alleges that one of the Tea Partiers was swinging his tripod "in a threatening manner," which ANSWER alleges is also left out of the video. I spoke with an ANSWER spokesperson who says none of the ANSWER protesters were videotaping, and the only video available of the incident is from the Tea Partiers. HuffPost has been unable to obtain any other video.

I wonder if these Tea-Baggers know that the Boston Tea Party was actually a reaction to an English law that "LOWERED" taxes on tea in order to protect the East India Company and make their tea more competitive? Hmmm....

As someone who was in the fight, what is difficult to see in the video is that the tea bagger actually struck first. If you look carefully (the video is now taken down--cowards), the in the 27th and 28th seconds of the video, you can see the tea bagger's arm reach out and strike the person with the bullhorn. THIS IS WHAT STARTS THE FIGHT.

In addition, you can see the tea bagger using the camera as a club, and at one point, he even wound up to hit the person prone on the ground with it, before being stopped by others. As I *WAS* hit by that camera, I can tell you it still hurts seven days later.

Also, less than half of the counter-demonstrators were from ANSWER. Two were members of the Socialist Party and three were not members of any organization.

CLASSIC CASE OF 'REFORMIST vs. 'RADICAL'......
I can't believe that so many in here are condemning ANSWER for defending themselves against racist right wingers. The tea baggers are some of the most vile anti-progressive people you will ever meet and yet when a group of lefties fights back, then they're " just as a bad as the righties". Give me a break! Look there is always going to be disputes between the 'radicals' and the 'reformers' but do you guys have to be so darn sissified to not see that the tea baggers finally got what they've been wanting. They want persecution and will drag it out of the left in order to feel vindicated. I don't agree with ANSWER's ultra-left ways but I will not take this "middle of the road" BS line that makes the Tea Baggers the "victims". You want to feel morally superior, go be a wishy washy Democrat in office.

Perhaps you need to watch the video again... Answer was not "defending themselves". You do not strike the FIRST blow and call it 'self defense'. Sorry, but approaching someone with a video camera is not enough cause to beat them! Yes, that makes their behavior WORSE than the tea baggers they were protesting against. And in case you also didn't notice, one of those people on the ground was a SENIOR citizen... Wow, you have a funny view of 'self defense'!

As for "making the tea baggers the victims"... Since the ONLY ones inflicting bodily injury were the Answer people, YES, that makes the tea baggers the "victims" in this case.
VICTIM-- "a person who suffers from a destructive or injurious action" --dictionary.com

If the tea baggers "got what they wanted", it's that they can NOW say it's the guys on the left behaving like thugs (and they have it on video to validate it)! Not to mention, the level of violence being used against those tea baggers was completely unjustified and bound to cause serious injury if the cops hadn't shown up... No one deserves bodily injury for walking over with a camera! And if you support that kind of thuggish behavior, perhaps you should consider switching ranks... But then maybe they're not violent enough for you either?

answer is a silly group.

A bunch of leftover marxists trying to find meaning.
02:31 AM on 11/19/2009
I'm still trying to figure out why ANY liberal-progressive voter would be in favor of illegal immigration?
09:29 AM on 11/20/2009
Group think?
12:01 AM on 11/19/2009
As one person who speaks from the left (and many I see agree)... Wrong is WRONG and these people at Answer don't represent most of us! Their inciting rhetoric and violent behavior makes them just as bad as the "racists" they claim to be protesting against.

I hope they face the FULL punishment of the law for their vile actions... It's NOT ok to hurt other people EVER!
12:21 AM on 11/19/2009
And to those on the left defending Answer... Are you serious?

Their bad behavior only served to undermine any legitimate point they tried make... Bad behavior is BAD behavior no matter who's side your on. Supporting them (just because you happen to agree with their positions) is like supporting kids in a school yard brawl because they're in your class... Infantile!!!
10:08 PM on 11/18/2009
yep. Blame the victims, folks. That is the way of the left..............

Yup I blame them for blahing for months about how tough they are and how they'll make a stand, never take a backward step and are ready n' armed for action.... and then turning into really poor value punching bags. Expected them to make slightly better sport than that.
01:07 AM on 11/19/2009
Geez... you sound as bad as they do! Worse actually, because we on the "left" have been condemning their rhetoric and bad behavior (that you speak of ), so how do you think it looks when you behave just as badly?
10:06 PM on 11/18/2009
The attackers are to blame and I hope they don't get away with hurting those folks.
02:02 PM on 11/18/2009
I guess since the Non-Teabaggers are acting like animals and want to act uncivil, maybe from now on, the teabaggers need to come armed, and when they are attacked again need to react approately. Hitler did what he thought was right for his country as well...And we all know where he went with that. You non-tea baggers better remember the tea baggers think you have ever right to speak out, but when they stop seeing it that way you better watch out. Judgement day will arrive sooner than you think.

Yes. We must all fear the corporate-sponsored "grass roots" uprising of the teabaggers. Don't like taxes or government programs, then turn down ALL social-security benefits. Turn down ALL food stamps and unemployment benefits. Stop using interstate highways, use only toll roads. And, oh, stop getting protection from the US military...since taxes pay for them too. If you want to watch our nation plummet into third-world status, just keep following these teabaggers down their rabbit hole.
11:24 AM on 12/02/2009
True Hitler was from Austria....Just like Obama comes from Kenya. The true tea baggers are not starting the fights, its the liberals, trying to start something, when there isn't anything to use against them. I only wish the super rich, would move to another country, and see what becomes of this country full of users...

At every one of these anti-immigrant/teaparty events, people should unfurl Hitler, swastikas and whatever else will make it stick in people's minds what is really going on. A little counter-intelligence.
02:18 PM on 11/23/2009
That's already going on. Where do you think the overtly racist signs come from? Certainly not from the people that want to restore Constitutional governance. No, it's lefties that love big government waving the racist junk, so that they can deflect from the real issues. Following your plan exactly.

When the leaders of the teabagger movement use incendiary language and massively false, ignorant accusations, are they actually surprised when their boomerang of hate comes back to clock them on the noggin?
12:17 PM on 11/18/2009
Then I suppose that you would agree the Black Panthers spouting racial slurs and waving around nightsticks at a polling pl;ace deserve a good beat down eh?

So far ALL the violence has been on the part of the Union Thugs.

Hate begets hate. Instead of complaining about make-believe policies and protesting imaginary threats, perhaps these tebaggers should be making the case for their actual platform. Which is what exactly? How dare I have affordable health care? How dare we have a fair tax policy without massive loopholes for the ultra-wealthy and self-regulated corporations? How dare we reduce corporate welfare? How dare we give the voting public more power than corporate lobbyists?

These poor misguided masses are doing the foot work for big pharma, big health insurance, and a slew of corporate lobbyists...at their own expense. It boggles the mind how so many could be duped so easily into protesting against their own self-interests. So very sad.

That last sentence made me laugh out loud like it's the punch line to a joke...

I went down and watched the local tea bagger gathering locally last summer. It is a good thing there was no violence as that would have caused multiple heart attacks and strokes due to the advanced age of most tea baggers there. A full two thirds were obviously collecting Social Security and Medicare benefits and they were protesting government spending and "socialism". As for example in SOCIAL Security and Medicare benefits, I guess.

While we fight one another banksters are laughing all the way to their tax-free havens. ;-)

First off, I am opposed to violence. That being said, the whole reason the two Tea Bag protesters went into that crowed was to get a reaction and that is what they got. For all the rallies that they hold advocating violence against those they oppose it was not a surprise to find that someone fought back. I am just amazed that they seem outraged at the response they got when I am sure it was exactly what they wanted. I mean be honest, why would those two go into the middle of this group and what did they say to them? I am sure it wasn't "Good morning good people, welcome" probably more like "go home {place favorite explicative here}!" or whatever needed to elicit a response. You get what you give.
12:21 PM on 11/18/2009
As a person who was there, and since you wondered ( I was the first person to cross the street, not shown in the video) I was more than polite and simply brought American flags to the counter protesters.

Here is what I said verbatim:

"Hi guys, we brought you some American flags to wave, for free, a gift, since we know you are all patriots and you seem to have forgotten yours"

Not one of them brought an American flag, in fact, I just got off the Tea Party Express II tour and all the counter demonstrators across the country seem to leave their American flags at home in favor of signs bearing images of Che Guevara (a violent communist killer)

I was greeted with the fat bald guy shoving a sign in my face (yes it hurt) I did not react, I simply went to each individual and offered them a flag, in a friendly and polite manner. All declined and simply screamed that I am a racist, one got on his bullhorn and put it to my ear chanting "racists go home".
12:51 PM on 11/18/2009
Just for the record, I was not involved in any violence.

I imagine that the ANSWER people would have had a bigger turnout had their mothers been able to wake them before noon.

Yeah you just can't get anywhere without a flag to wave can you? The most idiotic ideas and disrespect for people outside the small group you inhabit is of course legitimized if you have one of those cheap made in Taiwan flags to wave and obviously you measure peoples feeling for their nation by the number and size of the flags that they have.
It’s not like you ever see the most reprehensible, bigoted and devise groups covered in flags now is it?
"Have a flag Sir, it covers up the lack of having any logical ideas."
