Why does bad news make us sad? Why does getting a raise make us want to celebrate? Not many people have thought about these questions. They seem too simple, yet in a way they are deeply mysterious. In fact, the right answer can set your body free, while the wrong answer can prove to be an inescapable trap.

An Interview with Deepak Chopra, M.D.
I share a related story about a situation I had with a client. When we first met, he said he had been suicidal for a long time and that if I wasn’t the one to help, he would end his life. As you can imagine this could have become a burden or very scary. It turned out, however, to be a turning point in my life.
At first I took to offering empathy to this client. Each week he borrowed a bit of my exuberance and I took some of his sorrow. So when he arrived, I was joyous and when he left I was in grief. When he arrived he was in grief and when he left he was somewhat happier. I realized this exchange of energy was not a good solution.
Without telling him, I decided to commit myself to unconditional bliss. I intended to be bliss regardless of anything he told me about his life and sorrows. Within a few months it became easy. I could hold the vibration of unconditional bliss.
While I had compassion, I became more interested in who his soul was than what his body and mind were assuming themselves to be. One day he came in and said, “Laurie, I have been feeling myself to be something I will call unconditional bliss.” His body/mind changed.
