"The liberation of Iraq -- in other words, the decision that we had to move the Iraqi people and the region into a post-Saddam era -- will stand, I'm convinced, as one of the greatest decisions of American statecraft, as one of the things that American soldiers, male and female, the politicians who voted for it, those who've defended it, will be proudest of in the future of any decision we've ever made."

Hitch, Hitch, Hitch . . . I don't know what to say. Long ago I wrote you off, as did so many of your former friends and allies, and met whatever twisted rhetoric of yours I caught with a weary shrug and a sad smile. But recently, a reader of mine passed on some clips of you debating your brother, Peter, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and early in the event you unleashed the above quote. It wasn't so much the words, which are of course mad, worthy of a lesser Lewis Carroll character, but the tense, strange expression on your face as you uttered this lunacy.

I fear that something in you has seriously snapped. Up till now, I assumed that your war-mongering and imperial hubris were career-motivated. A Beltway regular like yourself will never go broke pimping U.S. wars and American exceptionalism. Disgusting, but part of the elite opinion deal. Others have called you crazy, but most didn't know you like I did. They confused professional opportunism for a break with reality, a cheap, easy way to dismiss your rantings. But not me. While I was occasionally fooled into thinking you had gone nuts, I always returned to the fact that you knew exactly what you were doing, that the whole Just War bit was largely a performance, however sordid and unsightly. I no longer buy into that theory. I'm afraid, dear boy, that you've checked into the Presidential Suite of the Rubber Room Hotel.

One would think, after crawling out on a weak limb and crashing to the pavement with this now-classic take:

"This will be no war -- there will be a fairly brief and ruthless military intervention . . . The president will give an order. [The attack] will be rapid, accurate and dazzling . . . It will be greeted by the majority of the Iraqi people as an emancipation. And I say, bring it on."

You might be through with fantasy predictions about Iraq. Yet, in the charred, smoldering face of all that has happened and continues to unfold, you not only keep talking shit, you do so with this ominous emotional edge, your eyes glazed with contempt. As much as it would impress me on a professional level, I don't think this is an act. You really believe the crap you spew. Amazing. And from what I hear, you're backing McCain, a man you once told me was a bandit that the Vietnamese had every right to shoot down. Now that he wants to kill Arabs and Persians (and God knows who else) for the next 100 years, he's acceptable to you? Any old mercenary in a shit storm? Where the fuck is this going? How does it end?

Lighten up, dudes!

Just because he is a mouthy sot does not mean he is wrong about everything all the time.

Anybody who jumps ugly on Sean Hannity has earned at least a little street cred.

There are lucid moments when he comes across as the smartest drunk in the bar.

And I mean that as a compliment.

In this great mongrel land of ours, with all its immigrants washing ashore, there is room in the public family for the eccentric British uncle who shows up at holiday dinner, shoots off his mouth and passes out with his face in the gravy dish.

So, let him rant. He's amusing. When his liver gives out ----- any day now, perhaps ----- he'll make for one entertaining obit.

And Hitch! Your former friend is correct. You were once a sensible man if one I disagreed with often. Now you just sound insane. Seek help.

When I see something irrational and unfathomable like Powell's lying to the UN or Hitchens's enthusiasm for the invasion if Iraq, i assume, not that these men are crazy or stupid but calculating and shrewd. I just can't imagine what's in it for Hitchens. Self-destruction? Self-destruction seems to be an essential part of his nature.

For him and Powell and Bob Woodward and George Tenet and Michael Mukasey and who knows how many heretofore respected people who trashed their reputations to become Bush boosters - the endgame is ignominy. Will these men become tragic, brokendown laughingstocks, the Mr. Gowerses of Washington politics, or try to reinvent themselves as having always been against the invasion from the beginning? We'll see.

I wish Hitch would use a comb. But anyway he believes that the decision to go to war in Iraq will be seen as genius by historians in the future, that the Iranian satellite post war Iraq will stabilize and there is no God but there is an Easter bunny and tooth fairy but both a misogynistic liberals. I couldn"t agree more now it"s time for my medication.

MP George Galloway called Hitchens "a drink-soaked former Trotskyist popinjay".

I always felt Galloway should have afterwards apologized-- to the popinjays.

You slander Trotsky and alcoholics, you should apologize. I am fairly certain the popinjays don't care.

Trotskyists such as the publishers of the Worldwide Socialist Web Site (WSWS) will prove that Mr Hitchins never was a Trotskyist shortly. Check out WSWS & WSWS's archives for a week or 2.. You & Mr Galloway, if he is among the living, owe Trotskyists an apology. WSWS will be willing to use your abject apology. Alcoholics Unamamos, aka AU, can be expected to contact you & loudly criticize you for saying that Mr Hitichins is "...drink soaked...". I'll join WSWS's Trotskyists & AU in drinking to censuring you. Strike 1 [drink soaked], strike 2 [former Trotskyist], are you quite sure that you want to keep playing your silly little game? Pitchers are flaky as hell. A bean ball could easily hit you. Popinjays are like sea gulls; they can defecate while flying. You are risking the ire of popinjays & other foul fowels.

Maybe the answer is as simple as this: Hitchens is a drunk, and drunks will say anything. I know--I've been there.

What a weak-kneed hatchet job. Of course you didn't give him any ammo to fire back with, except for calling him some nasty names which I am sure delighted him no end. We need more "devil's advocates" around -- people like Freud, who said in The Future of An Illusion: "Religion is an illusion and it derives its strength from the fact that it falls in with our instinctual desires." Hitchens ably connects the dots between Religion and Terrorism and shows us how they can work together to breed anarchy. I like his writing a helluva lot more than yours.

Whenever I happen across Hitchens on any of the TV shows, especially Bill Maher I just have to move on. I find his bullshit so inane that it makes me want to shoot my TV, much like when I try to watch our president.

Remember this TV people. I don't watch when this moron is on!!!! Let us finish up his 15 minutes and move on.

Having memories of Hitchens before he lost his mind, I share Dennis's bewilderment at how a man who so deftly deflated such puffed up poltroons as Reagan, that skewered religious charlatans including Falwell, Pope Benedict, and Mother Teresa ,could have drunk the Kool Aid so inartfully peddled by the thugs that seized control of our government.

Seriously, has Hitchens seen a doctor? A brain tumor or a blood clot might explain things.

By the way you must know Hitchens very well because you back up your
argument with nothing except to quote him. I would like to have seen some
quotes from his brother in that debate.

I had the impression when looking at a you tube video that when asked about
his opinions concerning Guantanamo I could swear he looked into the camera
as if to say 'tell me how much I'm getting, Grover, then I'll tell you my opinion.
Anyone who wants to attack Hitchens can just compare his story on Gitmo
with the reality of it.

It's difficult to avoid remembering all the nonsense Christians teach when you have been trained by Christians before you had learned to think. Mr Hitchins hasn't forgotten the Christian myth of a just war. No one is perfect. Let's remember that he still urinates into the baptismal urn or pool, the comunion wine, spits in to holy water, sneaks hash-hish into incense along with ashes from whatever he smokes & wipes his nose on the altar cloth. He is still trying to become a perfect atheist. To garble what Lincoln said when somebody made a big deal of Gen Grant's drinking, "Find out what Mr Hitchins drinks & send a case of it to everybody who contributes a blog to HP.". It couldn't hurt.

Hitchens is a bitter drunken has-been Limey hack writer who is an attention whore and who spends too much time revelling in his own words and hoping to offend as many people as is humanly possible. We'd be all better off if he opted to get plastered w/ Anne Coultergeist and spawn some frightening kids. That would serve them ALL what they deserve.

Wow! I wish I had said that. Perfect summary of this bitter Brit.
