DEA Chief Administrator Slips Up, Says Medical Marijuana Is Between Patients and Their Doctors

Posted: 06/22/2012 3:44 pm

By now hundreds of thousands of people have seen that DEA chief administrator, Michele Leonhart, was grilled by a congressional committee about her stance on marijuana policy earlier this week. She eluded anything controversial that came her way. Something that has been overlooked though was that when she was asked about the efficacy of medical marijuana, Leonhart admitted she believes "that's between [a patient] and his doctor."

The DEA has always been at the forefront of raiding medical marijuana dispensaries and arresting and jailing medical marijuana patients and providers. The Obama administration has already authorized more raids on medical marijuana dispensaries than George Bush had in his entire presidency. But now we know that the head of the organization leading these raids thinks the issue should be left to medical professionals. Her comments scream hypocrisy and have outraged advocates across the country.

National support for medical marijuana has floated between 70-80 percent for years now, and for the first time, a Gallup poll found that 50 percent of the country supports legalizing marijuana for non-medical purposes. It's not simply a shift in budgetary necessity, but rather a philosophical shift in thinking across the country has led to this rapid increase of support.

A New York State Supreme Court Justice suffering from pancreatic cancer courageously came out about his marijuana use for medicinal purposes recently in a New York Times op-ed and has helped change the debate as well. Even politically savvy Democrats such as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have supported reforming marijuana laws recently. The irony of drug war bureaucrats being paid to lie and giving truthful and personal opinions can get you into hot water is so wrong on its face. The DEA needs to recognize the vast support for medical marijuana and end their crusade against people who are sick and find relief from a medicine recommended by their doctors, just like Michele Leonhart believes.

If you watch how hesitant Leonhart is responding to questions from Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), you can tell she gets paid to cover up any science showing marijuana is less harmful than other drugs or even helps people suffering from serious medical conditions. The intent of their questions was to get Leonhart to say something counter to DEA policy, and it worked perfectly. Just watch the videos and see for yourself.

Here's Leonhart getting grilled by Rep. Steve Cohen. Medical marijuana question begins at 4:05 mark:

And here's Leonhart avoiding simple questions about marijuana from Rep. Polis:

If Leonhart believes that marijuana is between patients and their doctors, what is the sense or reason in listing marijuana under schedule one? It is a plant and not a drug. This plant has hundreds of chemicals in it because it is a plant not a single drug. It should not be listed as a drug. It is not dangerous - it has never had a fatality associated with its consumption or use.

How many have died trying to stop it? Why?

You are on the right track.

And read:
Shoulda Robbed a Bank

The REAL story of the pot business....Boys and Girls bringing in the weed.
It is CAPTILALISM in its truest form...and, there are NO victims.

The smugglers are not committing a crime....they are performing a public service...bringing the people what they want.

It is OUR right, as a FREE PEOPLE, to pursue our own happiness.
At least, that is what I was taught in school.

Has it changed?

I think this grilling if the DEA chief is very powerful for national and even global cannabis policy. It's one thing to see complete trash they call the DEA scheduling list but its another thing completely to hear the DEA chief actually try to defend it. I mean EVERYONE with a brain knows meth is more harmful than marijuana!

Rep. Polis slipped up as well. He should have followed up with asking is the plant dangerous because of the Schedule 1 status OR is it classified as Schedule 1 because it is intrinsically dangerous? The DEA admins could only point to the former which has no reasoning, logic or justification.

Any DEA Chief who can't or won't answer that question readily should be fired for obstinacy, ignorance and lack of imagination.

When Googling Hypocrisy it says, did you mean GOP?

What I don't understand is how Obama can't know this is what his second term will win with. All of Obamas town hall Internet forums were 1 out of 3 questions on legalization. If one out of three ask the president about legal pot. That must be his biggest opportunity to differentiat himself from all the rest of politics. He tried gay marriage to get votes and not even half the people support it, then immigration didnt give him much of a lift in the polls because Hispanics will never vote GOP all obama has left of controversial stuff is pot legalization.

I think you just hit the nail on the head! Wait until September when President Obama announces that he is going to stop raiding dispensaries. That should motivate all of the people who voted for him last time hoping he would take positive action on drug policy to vote for him again.
I'll vote for him too, but I still know what he's all about.

Why is Marijuana still illegal?I have yet to hear an argument.. from the Government that I could believe,so what is the real reason.

Ask me about industrial hemp

Cannabis is still illegal because it is a safe and effective medicinal herbal remedy for a wide range of ailments and hemp is a very valuable commodity crop. More than 25,000 products can be made better, stronger, liter, more durable and less expensive from hemp. Once cannabis is liberated so too will hemp. Hemp will compete with GMO crops like corn and soy breaking the power of several monopolies. That's why cannabis is still illegal.

One of the biggest reason Marijuana is illegel is because when a person is stoned, they don't want to go to the malls and buy stuff they don't need.

Leonhart may believe that medical marijuana is between patient and doctor, but how does she expect a patient to get marijuana without a provider? The doctor isn't supposed to be the provider, and if a doctor tried to do that, the doctor would be shut down by this administration.

But we don't "need" the ad hoc "dispensary" paradigm brought so aggressively by the Libertarians in California.

The actual law there does not Even mention dispensaries, or drug stores, as I recall...but it does provide for the same kind of small, natural, organic, local, community home delivery networks of patients, doctors, caregivers and growers that are enjoyed by Oregon and Washington, also early legalizers...where Libertarian "dispensary" scheme initiatives were recently voted down, because we don't "need" those "dispensaries" to get our medicine, nor the the heat from DOJ.
We need rescheduling, which only Democrats have tended to support, and even introduce, repeatedly, historically, only to get shot down by the Republicans.

Obama has cut potheads more slack than any other president ever dared...and kept his word on that.

Cracking down on the profiteers pimping the program to get rich is NOT "the same" as attacking medical marijuana.

Critics of that policy hurt their own credibility by misrepresenting the reality, heh.

Unprincipled money-grubbing Libertarians, who want to balance the budget by taxing potheads, lol, want to get rich, plain and simple, and they don't care how many people get set up and go down in the process, over their "dispensary" provocations.

All they care about is trying to whittle down likely Democratic voter turnout, to the sole benefit of the Republicans, and the extreme right.

That isn't true. You need to read what Gary Johnson has to say. Sure does not sound anything like you are describing. Better take another look. You are on a merry go round. Democrats do not have a corner on the marijuana support wagon.

It needs de-scheduling not rescheduling. They don't prescribe willow bark when you need an aspirin, and they won't prescribe marijuana even if its rescheduled. Marijuana prohibition on a Federal level must end.

Name one business in America that runs without profit or subsidy. I'll wait.

No procurement delivery system will be without liability unless the prohibition on marijuana ends. Don't kid yourself. Marijuana is a Federal offense no matter whether its pimpin to get rich or Ma and Pa Kettle.

Yea I noticed the big slip up as well.. glad you brought it some more attention. We all need to press our congressmen to get some real change going. I applaud the efforts of Rep Cohen and Rep Polis. Keep up the good work.

It would be interesting to know the real reason the Government has for continuing to keep Marijuana.illegal.

There's many reasons at play in this idiocy. On the democratic side it is mostly just ignorance and fear of losing re-election, on the republican side there's a lot more shady stuff at work. Lobbyists for big pharma, big alcohol, and petrochemical corporations give big campaign contributions to a lot of congressmen, these forces do not want competition from cannabis.
