Are You Living on Purpose Or by Accident?

"Where there is no vision, the people perish."
-- Proverbs 29:18

Within you, there is a destiny waiting to be born -- a life of such purpose, creativity and contribution that its light would blind you if apprehended it in its fullness. But to actualize it, you must dive beneath the surface tension of the mind's need to control the present. You must project into the future, tap into a vision for your life bigger than your TV screen (or at least your computer screen) and bring your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions into integrity with it.

It sounds difficult to do. But we're all doing it on some level -- although often with less-than-inspired visions. For example, people who walk around fearing economic collapse, nuclear fallout, or any number of impending disasters, are regularly running worst-case scenarios in their mind and commiserating with others about how bad things are. In other words, they're in integrity with a vision of lack and limitation.

And what we're in integrity with becomes our experience.

If this describes you, the good news is it's not even your vision, it's the collective consciousness -- or collective nightmare. It's a thought virus you caught. And there's a vaccination against it, or antidote to it: cultivating a vision rooted in your core values that makes you come alive -- then committing to it as if your life depends on it.

It's not for the faint of heart. As Emerson said, "God will not have His work made manifest by cowards." But the alternative is a life of quiet desperation. Your destiny won't let you rest until you let it express. The pain pushes until the vision pulls. Until you answer the calling of your soul with a resounding "Yes," you'll feel like a puppet in this divine production.

But what does it mean to have a vision? We often think of a vision as something that foretells the future. But that's prediction, based on the cause-and-effect of your dominant thought trend, and can always be changed. In some self-help teachings, a vision is something we create based on what we believe will fulfill us. But that's imagination and is limited, since imagination, at best, is just a rearrangement of what's already known -- or worse, a reaction to a limited self-image.

True vision can't be created or changed; it's part of the changeless fabric of "Ultimate Reality," the realm of perfect prototypes or "ideal forms" as Plato put it. True vision can never be imagined; it comes from a place beyond the mind, revealing something unprecedented. And true vision is never in the future; it's a realization of what is in the timeless dimension of our being.

It may be temporarily obscured like the sun on a cloudy day. But like the sun, our vision is always shining, waiting for us to pierce the weather of our mind and let its warmth and vitalizing power into our life.

Finally, a life of true vision isn't about adding anything to us, but about seeing our "Real Self," releasing everything it isn't, and allowing our life to unfold according to Its perfect pattern. Michelangelo knew this when he created the David. He saw the completed masterpiece in the block of marble then chipped away everything that wasn't it.

That is what we are called to do as artists of our life -- discover the masterpiece hiding in this block of mortal stone and set it free.

Tapping Into Your Vision

  1. Take a moment to become still and watch your breath. Don't control it, just let it breathe itself. With each exhalation, release everything that has come before and all concern for the future.
  2. Bring to your mind and heart a relationship where you've felt unconditional love -- whether it's for you or by you, whether human or animal. Feel into that love. Let it expand.
  3. From this place ask: "What is God's idea of Itself as me? What did God create when God created me, and for what purpose?" (If the word God is a problem, use what works for you).
  4. Next ask "What must I release or embrace -- how must I change -- to allow my highest vision to emerge?"
  5. Then ask "What action can I take today to live more fully from the vision?"
  6. Finally, affirm out loud or to yourself: "I know who I really am and why I am alive; I easily release everything that isn't true about me and joyfully live my destiny now!"

Give thanks for this moment of receptivity, regardless of what answers you received. The intention of awakening is enough to start the emergence process.

The first step in learning to think in God's perspective and later come to realize that we have limited ur mind.....in everything to a very small circle.
How wonderful is God's love that all things work for our good when we surrender to Him only Unlearn to be selfish.
Great work done by you to bring a total transformation in the way we should live
and have a vision in life.Always inspiring.

Thank you, Iatha. It's true that our mind and our ability to even imagine what God has in store for us -- what God's Will is -- is limited. That's why it's best to surrender our ideas and will and say simply THY WILL BE DONE. Because God's Will for us is the greatest possible good that could ever be imagined, and infinitely greater than that!

I believe EVERYONE has a purpose or a calling in this world. It is up to us to be aware of our purpose or passions toward pursuing it. Some are born lucky enough to get a head start, while others have to struggle with it a bit more and the rest never find out what that truly is...but everyone is entitled to greatness. Barbara Walters on The View made a stinky comment today by saying she doesn't think everyone has a calling. What does she define a calling?? I was slightly taken aback by that. Because she hasn't interviewed you in one of her many wonderous careers in journalism that you're not considered worthy of greatness? What... So narrow minded. Sorry, needed to get that off my chest. Toodaloo!

Yeah, Barbara was a bit off the mark with that one. She might have meant that not everyone has something 'big' to do, something world-changing. But everyone has a calling. It's just that only a few answer that call.

Thanks for sharing -- keep it up.

Derek, we think you've described this thought of living on purpose perfectly. We agree that once people understand that "what we're in integrity with becomes our experience" they can truly transform their lives. Empowerment is the key, and this is one of your main ideas that we align with strongly. When we let go of the collective nightmare and listen to our Soul's calling we can enter into a life full of passion and meaning. All of our answers are found within. May everyone be the artist of their lives, and uncover their "Real Self". Bravo, Jack & Stacey

It's called the Law of Attraction, which basically says that we attract the things and conditions into our lives that we think about most and believe to be true of ourselves. Thus, we set our own limitations and boundaries in our lives.

I wasn't sure what you were responding to -- the way your comment started it appeared as if it was a 'response' to another comment. Is that true?

Thanks for your thoughts. It's true that we tend to attract what we deeply believe about life and ourselves. I would just add to that, that what's really happening is that as we create the inner conditions that are congruent with who we REALLY are, what's ALREADY inside us, then that potential begins to 'emerge.' It looks like we're attracting things, but what's actually happening is that our Larger Self is emerging in 'the field' (we're not in our body, our body is in our field of consciousness). So the idea of 'attracting' is a linguistic convenience, much the way that saying the sun rises and sets is. We know now that this isn't what's happening at all. The sun isn't moving, we're just revolving.

Peace -- Derek

Hi, I wasn't sure how to respond, because your response sounds like a response to some other comment. When you say 'neither', what are you referring to? I would love to learn more!

i suppose i was being kind of flippant. i have these memories gleaned through years of therapy, rebirthing, guided imagening, that sort of thing of not wanting to incarnate.

i am in a ball of light with other souls and i am told it's time to go and i don't want to because i see grey misery ahead.
then a voice tells me that i have a duty to life and off i trudge.

i have had and still have a fairly miserable life and i do wonder if it would have coped beter if i had come here with more enthusiasm. as it is i have had a hard time coping with the abuse and neglect i experienced as a child which i suppose led to a less successful life than it might have been.
then again ; i did not die of an overdose in an alley or something like that.
i struggle on with lots of problems , physical and psychological , mainly because i have children.
that's it in a nutshell.

What Fabien says strikes a chord in me. I get apprehensive with the talk of a bigger vision for my life, probably much like the acorn would if it knew from acorn consciousness it would be a Oak tree. I took a shower after reading this blog and it occurred to me that some of my apprehension comes from a comparison thing I do, like I think I should be someone famous in the country I live in (or world) to qualify to be this bigger vision, when that is not what I want. I think Derek does say about the vision aligning with my highest values, which I guess is the gift I give to the world as my values are uniquely Judy, and perhaps the meditation and asking is about guidance as to how they can be expressed to their full potential. If I remember this it means I don't need to feel the struggle I often feel when I think I need to DO something that I am not yet vibrationally aligned with, or that I should be someone other than who I truely am. Perhaps that is also part of the struggle in recognising that GOD part of me when my attention as mostly been problem/ limitation/ego oriented.

Hi Judy. I think it's easy to think that you have to do something 'big' and that leading a 'visionary life' means changing the world in some big way. But of course that's not true. The only obligation, if there was such a thing, is to be yourself. Whether that's a great parent, teacher, or whatever. And in fact just by being your authentic self and radiating love, you ARE changing the world by changing human consciousness.

Beyond that, you're never asked to do more than what you're vibrationally aligned with. The key is to tap into the highest vision that feels authentic to you, that is your sincere desire, then align with that vibrationally...then ask what you are called to do from that place. that's where right-action comes into play.

You're doing great work -- just keep believing in yourself and your vision and saying 'yes' to God's highest Idea of your life.

To Your Emergence!

Interesting article. I know unconditional love from one source (human but transitioned). Don't get it from animal sources ... cats don't do unconditional. :P

Whether any of that means I'll do something different from what I do now, on this plane, I don't know. There is something in the works; maybe it'll happen, maybe not. But ... this is only one short phase of life; proportionally much shorter than the time in utero in a centenarian's life. Spirit doesn't end and that's where we go Home. One might say, it isn't the end of the world if we don't fulfill everything we think we could/should do here. :)

One thing threw me: "And what we're in integrity with becomes our experience. ". The grammar of that sentence was curdled, I couldn't make out what it meant at all. Clarification, please?

Indeed, it's not the end of the world if we don't fulfill everything we think we could/should -- and in fact, because we are infinite beings that's actually impossible! But we can be and contribute so much more than we often think is possible. Most people overestimate what they can do in a year, but underestimate what they can do in a lifetime!

In terms of that line, ""And what we're in integrity with becomes our experience." What it means is that what we are in alignment with, in agreement with -- even if it's not supportive or constructive -- ultimately becomes our experience. So when we're walking around 'agreeing' -- and therefore becoming alignment with -- lack and limitation, we are creating that in our life.

Thank you for sharing.

Stay Inspired!

Sometime back in my life, I would have appreciated your kind of reasoning. I would have tried to believe! But I discovered that ot buid a house, you need nails and paint, lumber and electric fixtures, stones, brick, cement and sand, and so on.

Some people work well with a vision and a need to be recognized as leaders. Some others have found a different way of sharing leadership.

But if you are a stone, don't look down on bricks. If you're paint, don't look down on nails.

We are all useful, and all spendable!!!

Dear Fabien, thank you for your comments. You might have misunderstood my article. I wasn't saying that you had to have some grandiose vision; I was explaining that we ALL have a purpose for being here, something magnificent -- even if it's being the best brick or nail in the pile! But that, in order to fulfill it, we need to tap into it within us. So whatever your lot in life is, I can guarantee that there is something truly wonderful within you that is either expressing now or has the potential to -- whether as a parent, friend, teacher, plumber, or whatever.

Indeed we are all useful!

Have an inspired day,

Derek
