Priceline.com: Will You Prove Your Spokesperson Worthy for a Million Dollars?

Posted: 08/13/2012 5:06 pm

In my line of work, I hear horror stories every day. Some involve ghosts and goblins or psychics with premonitions, but not in the way you might expect. The James Randi Educational Foundation exists to bring light to claims of the paranormal, and often to the ways people fake paranormal abilities to take advantage of others: from false hope to reconnect grieving families with dead relatives to offering hollow promises of miraculous cures. So when I heard that priceline.com was featuring "Long Island medium" Theresa Caputo in their commercials, I knew I had to fire off a letter to Priceline's CEO and ask them to prove that Ms. Caputo is what she claims to be. And I even put a million dollars on the line.

Read our letter for yourself, and consider giving priceline.com your own thoughts on the Long Island Medium here.

*****

To: Jeff Boyd, Chief Executive Officer, Priceline.com

Dear Mr. Boyd,

On behalf of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) and the countless Americans who have been exploited by fake psychics and mediums, I am writing to address your recently debuted commercial campaign featuring "medium" Theresa Caputo, performing her usual gimmick of claiming to communicate with dead people, and to make you an offer of one million dollars if she can prove her talents are real. As you know, in your ad, she speaks to the fictional "Priceline Negotiator" from beyond the grave, but sadly, she claims to speak to the dead in real life as well, and the results are not so funny.

Since 2011, Ms. Caputo has starred in her own reality series, Long Island Medium on TLC, wherein she purports to speak to her often grieving clients' dead relatives. I have seen the show myself, and as a magician and a skeptic, I couldn't help but notice that her "readings" looked suspiciously like a well-known manipulative collection of psychological techniques by which self-proclaimed psychics and mediums make it seem like they are receiving otherwise-impossible messages from the deceased. It is difficult to watch the show and not feel heartbroken for those who are desperate to hear from the departed... and even more so if they are being manipulated by a charlatan.

I respectfully invite you to have your new representative, Ms. Caputo, apply for the James Randi Educational Foundation's Million Dollar Challenge. Since 1996, the JREF has offered a prize of $1 million to anyone who can demonstrate a paranormal ability under mutually agreed-upon scientific conditions and without cheating. So far, no one has claimed the prize. Should Ms. Caputo win, we would be happy to award the prize to the charity of your and her choosing. Perhaps the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, of which your company is fond?

If Ms. Caputo can do what she claims to do, she ought to be thrilled to have the opportunity to prove to the world that her talents are real, and to give the prize money to a worthy cause (or to keep the million dollars for herself). If she is unwilling to take the challenge, I suspect her talents may be as manipulative as her motivations are selfish. In fact, the JREF recently awarded Ms. Caputo this year's tongue-in-cheek Pigasus Award for paranormal performers, to highlight the harm of her untested claims. Please consider salvaging priceline.com's good name by putting your new spokesperson to the test. After all, you wouldn't hire a doctor to represent your company without asking for her credentials, would you? Let's make certain that this medium's astounding claims are legitimate, as opposed to greedy manipulations of those who are mourning.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

D.J. Grothe, President

James Randi Educational Foundation

James Randi is a master of deception and mis-direction. It is amazing (even classic) that he and his organization are trying to pretend to be an objective resource on paranormal phenemena, especially when they are so partisan. In fact, Randi is not even a true skeptic; he is a debunker. A true skeptic would have a truly open mind to nature and to unusual phenomena, but we all know that Randi is so extremely partisan that he confuses his followers through crafty deception and mis-direction. It is, however, so cute to watch his cult follow him and then criticize other cults (ya gotta love the contradictions).

Evidence of fraud in Randi's own life became big news when his live-in partner was charged with a federal felony for identity theft! http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2011-09-15/news/fl-jose-alvarez-artist-identity-theft-20110914_1_id-theft-identity-frauds -- Either Randi co-participated in his partner's identity-theft or he himself was snookered (does anyone out there really believe the latter?).

People who still believe in the veracity of anything that Randi or his representatives say need to think twice (or thrice).

Good for you.

If I was Theresa Caputo or Jeff Boyd, I would accept any requests from the James Randi "Educational" Foundation. I would take their tests, prove them wrong and give the €1 million to a charity - there's nothing to loose? ... unless they are fake of course.

The JREF also invites you to approach them. James Randi is a very friendly and open man. So, go approach them (They're online) and prove yourself then. Unless you're a fake...which you probably are.

People who are dumb enough to believe in psychics will continue to do so no matter what. Psychics themselves have said they have no reason to prove themselves to non-believers, many believers continue to support them and always will. When I have demonstrated cold readings to people and how simple it is the believers always say I have "the gift" and say I should develop the skill or ask me to contact other spirits.

DJ, what on earth are you doing? I'm a fan of yours (and support JRF), but you have monumentally missed the boat here. The advertisement - which I have seen several times - actually spoofs mediums and those who believe them. It's very obviously presenting the whole thing as a scam, from Caputo's vacant vaguery to the naive excitement of the "client" (and the longsuffering look of incredulity her more savvy husband gives her). Lighten up - this ad is working FOR you, not against you.

Dude, calm down a notch or two, it's just a silly commercial. Are you guys really this desperate for a little PR?

I, personally, cannot understand why we just don't re-introduce the time-honored practice of burning witches and heretics at the stake. For centuries, we were free from wild paranormal claims being aired in a public forum due to the grievous penalty that one would suffer as a consequence of making those claims. The Randi Foundation should focus their energy and money on lobbying efforts to reintroduce some healthy public people burning into our society and then watch what becomes of those paranormal experts.

Ohhhhhhh.....I absolutely LOVE BBQ! I even have my own special tarragon BBQ sauce. Can we invite Jeffrey Dahlmer?

Would that include all frauds? Pat Robertson? Benny Hinn? Creflo Dollar? Imams? Dalai Lama? The staff of the federal reserve? Mechanics who don't provide the old part, even when you ask? Personal trainers? Boy Scout leaders?

If so, I'm in! :D

If Theresa Caputo was just considered an actor or an entertainer, I certainly wouldn't have a problem.

Rather than just being a TV personality, an entertainer or an actor, I believe she makes false promises to reunite the dead with the living, and at the expense of her clients' faith.

Taking advantage of the longings of the bereaved is manipulative and ugly.

If Priceline.com wants to go on record that they consider her just to be an entertainer and that they do not believe her claims, I'd be very happy.

The pretentiousness and self-aggrandizement of the JREF is bordering on buffoonery. You seriously want to tell us that in a country where you and Thomas cannot marry and where Carrie may soon not be able to make decisions about her own body, that you're going after a medium?? C'mon DJ, you're too good for that. There are more meaningful things to devote your energies toward. I'm very saddened.

If I was Theresa Caputo or Jeff Boyd, I would ignore any requests from the James Randi "Educational" Foundation. It's a bunch of third-rate magicians who are totally irrelevant to the scientific study of psychic phenomena. The million dollar challenge is just a marketing campaign designed to atrract non-believers into contributing to their "foundation" which has recently found itself in the headlines being accused of serious criminal activity. Since you enjoy issuing challenges, Mr Grothe, how about you take one first? Prove to us that James Randi has not been complicit in passport fraud and identity theft dating back to the 1980's.
02:41 PM on 08/16/2012
Oh, so much to pick at here. Randi is known internationally, tourned with Alice Cooper, and appeared on National (and international TV) many times, including Carson, Nova, and so forth. Penn and Teller are members of the JREF - if they're not first-rate magicians I don't know who is. Who do you consider to be a top-rate magician?

The million-dollar challenge is a real challenge, and been used many times (including on NBC's Nightline) to show Americans that many people who claim to be psychic are, in fact, not even a little bit. That's important.

As for Randi's involvement in possible passport fraud - that's a personal issue and has nothing to do with the foundation. But you'll bring it up every chance you can, I bet, 'cause you can't think of anything else to say.
05:35 PM on 08/16/2012
My point, Andy, is that they are magicians, not scientists. And the challenge is simply a marketing tool - it proves nothing. As to Randi's certain involvement in fraud, it speaks to his character and untrustworthiness. The JREF is fast becoming the new Westboro Baptist Church: annoying, insignificant, and out of touch. Hey, wait a minute! Randi toured with Alice Cooper? Well, then of course he understands quantum physics.

It's a bunch of third-rate magicians who are totally irrelevant to the scientific study of psychic phenomena.
