Category 1 thinkers are the exception, but what is even more critical is the ability to recognize when something is a black swan after it has occured and its impact is beginning to be felt. A black swan like 9-11 was likely to recognized fairly early, but some black swans come on more gradually like the internet. Its the recognition speed that's key and if you can see it before hand it's not a black swan in all likelihood.
