I have been following this catastrophe since it began, and I am deeply concerned for the survival of the human race. I would like to have access to real time information, which is unlikely due to the media black out currently in place. I want to know the possibility of an extinction level event and the odds of surviving such an occurrence. I am very grateful for your informative article, and pray AND intend that this is NOT the end of life on the planet.

Please be very careful reading this dribble. This author is mixing science and conjecture (fantasy).
This is a true disaster, but mixing the extinction event theory of methane release and this event is a really big stretch. No one knows why the extinction event happened - what events took place, but it was probably due to ocean temperatures increasing dramatically and releasing the methane hydrates. We don't see that today happening. It would take a lot of energy to do that and a long period of time.

If we don't burn fossil fuels, then they will accumulate and create the problem you are addressing. Fossil fuels are millions of years in the making while there is a huge amount that has reached that age today and there will be more tomorrow. The energy from the sun is building up on earth like a huge solar collector. We need to use it, not run away from it. We need to use more fossil fuels. We need to have an honest dialodue about energy. Politics is clouding these basic truths. http://www.globalwarming360.net/

Dumping waste in your own house is not a solution to the problem. Yes, the earth accumulates energy, we all use it, but using it and dumping it in your own house is not a solution - it is a garbage dump. The earth is a finite space like your house. You can't continue to dump as you will live in a pit.
Seasick_Ocean_Guy: Dumping waste in your own house is not a solution
Right. As Janine Benyus says in her book "Biomimicry" what we are doing with fossil fuels is equivalent to closing the windows and doors of a house and burning all the furniture. And yet, nature converts sunlight as the primary source of energy, quickly, cleanly, efficiently. There are other ways to have and use energy that don't give a big bang for the buck. And that's the point. It is (and should be) accessible to everyone. This tribal nonsense--how we structure government, religion, business--is passe and done. And perhaps we are too, because greed had to take center stage.
NoLongerAnonymous: Right. As Janine Benyus says in her book "Biomimicry" what
Question...does anyone know of an active forum on the internet that is being used to communicate what is going on with the gulf oil spill, that is being conducted in an independent manner without political trashing, and by sensitive, informed, educated writers?

I couldn't agree more...In addition, I have been "scouring" the internet for updates, news, etc. and it is very hard to find any source that consistently gives up to the date news. What gives? Are we the only ones that recognize the huge disaster this is becoming?
Pathetic.
Guess I will go back to watching Wimbledon.

Good question! Maybe it's up to HP readers to start spreading this info through the social networks and such, so that those with their heads in the soon-to-be-toxic sand aren't lulled into a sense of false security, thinking that it's just a few birds and fish suffering from this disaster.

At the end of the Wizard of Oz, the Wizard sends up clouds of red smoke to obscure his projected visage. These red clouds look a lot like those coming from BP's ongoing leak in the gulf. With all the BS BP is putting out rivaling the pollution of the gas and oil, we're treated to damage control similar to that the Wizard put out when the little dog Toto pulls the curtain away from his machinations. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain," he says, pulling the controls that distort his image to impress Dorothy and her pals.
Every public relations trick is being pulled, but those pictures of the plumes trump rhetoric. That this leak has lasted so long has enabled the public to get a steady education about the many horrible potentials it has opened for the Gulf and the rest of the world.
Thanks for continuing to educate us on the dire straits we're trying to negotiate. If only water could save us from witchery and public relations sorcery BP and its henchmen put out. The dead zone our over-fertilized industrial farming expands in the Gulf can only continue to expand as long as we over-fertilize the government subsidized corn and bean crops that help destroy not only the Gulf, but our bodies from cheap calories that drive our obesity "epidemic." Good example of government interference in the marketplace! Thank Reagan and Butz the industrialization of our food crops!

I want an official response from the scientists at DOE and the Dept. of the Interior. Why was BP allowed to drill 12,000 feet deeper than their permit. This Macondo methane problem was something that the scientific community knew about, and our government failed to have MMS enforce these depth limits. Now we have pricked a huge toxic balloon and could destroy the planet in the process. How long do we really have? Days? Months? Can we track the accumulation of the methane at depth to have any idea of when it is likely to go off? Help!! We need to get the news media to press BP and the government for answers, and I mean hard!! We deserve to know how long we have before the end comes, don't we?

I respectfully request that HuffPo readers and anyone who give a s**t about this put pressure on their elected officials and the governors of the gulf states to demand an independent criminal investigation into this disaster.

Are there any studies on the ability of methane saturated water vapor to form clouds? If so, in their cloud formation, what is their relative density? would they manifest as a fog? would they be a cumulonimbus? What is the static electric potential of methane vapor clouds? do they have create an inert vapor or wildly generate static electricity? Is the flammable point low enough to be sparked by lightning? So many questions. Need a chemist to weigh in.

Considering electric cars were available in the 1800's this pollution is a testament to conservative greed.
1830s to 1900s: Early history
Before the pre-eminence of internal combustion engines, electric automobiles held many speed and distance records. Among the most notable of these records was the breaking of the 100 km/h (62 mph) speed barrier, by Camille Jenatzy on April 29, 1899 in his 'rocket-shaped' vehicle Jamais Contente, which reached a top speed of 105.88 km/h (65.79 mph). Before the 1920s, electric automobiles were competing with petroleum-fueled cars for urban use of a quality service car.[20]
