Housewares mega-retailer IKEA has announced that it will stop selling traditional incandescent light bulbs in its U.S. stores effective January 1, 2011....
deeeeeeeeerest Dr DK Matai,
I couldn't have said it better myself. What a superb article! i'm sending it again to Obama/Biden and others and chiding them: i thought the USA was the great innovator, leader, yada yada.. . ;) Let's beat Japan 2 the punch in friendly good natured competition and get the first and biggest peace/piece of the pie we can.. .hee.. .if all the super powers race to be the first 2 initiate precious Tesla's intelligent designs, guess how better off and quicker hour world/whirled will be than ever, aay? aye.. :D~ eye eye captain.. . :D~ I kept thinking.. . i want to write another reeeelly good letter about this, and saw ur article and u did the pristine job of it that needed to be done.. .
ttttttthhhhhhhhhaaaaaaannnnnnnkkkkkkk uuuuuuuuuuu, i kiss the ground u walk on, i am not worthy, heee..... my heart is full of greatitude bcuz of u, my o precious lord and divine sublime friend, DK Matai! How brilliant was this article? oooooooohhh, just about purrrrrrfect, far as i can c, luvuso, hey/hay~namaste~mahalo~ c aho!

The problem as was faced by Tesla's backer is "if it's wireless where do we put the meter?"
This is the major difference as Japan and China are more concerned about spending on infrastructure and we are concerned about who is going to profit from something. Is there any doubt where we would be as a world right now if not for the energy and car companies suppressing technology?
Donell_Wickett: The problem as was faced by Tesla's backer is "if
This would be superseded by a repeater system in a flash. Shorter range laser repeaters would be better to minimize heat generation. The system could then move into solar orbit. Recapture heat in lasers and the systems environmental imprint and offset disappear when it sucks heat from thin air. But hey its about spending billions on Japanese workers isn't it (: protectionists).

Sorry, I am a HUGE fan of point of use solar, but this is insane. The LAST thing we need are billions more microwaves and EMFs radiating the crap out of us!!
Please, can't we focus on producing clean energy right where we need it and becoming about 90% more energy efficient? I hate the thought of this thing zapping us, and still being a "centralized" 19th Century model (centralized 1 GW base station) with long transmission going to where the power is needed. It does not move democratization/decentralization of our grid forward at all, does not account for the myriad failures of long transmission, and reinforces the Big Energy model...
Yes, the problem with the scheme is that they can heat up the atmosphere and cause changes in weather patterns and of course ambient microwaves are not going to help us health wise. I think that point of use has great advantages and it does keep us away from the ugly big energy model.
Indra: Yes, the problem with the scheme is that they can
I was always impressed by Tesla's achievments--and pleased that he, as David, did triumph over Goliath (Edison) in the battle over electrical transmission.
Having written that, I must admit to thinking that these WPT schemes are ill-advised. I am not convinced that it can be done efficiently or safely.

Clean renewable energy can power the entire world indefinitely and cleanly. Fossil fuels are obsolete. Our survival depends on changing our entire system of energy to clean renewable sources.

This is an excellent idea. We should follow Japan's lead and build our own satellite power system. Unfortunately, we will have to defeat the oil companies first. Their hold on power in this country must be eliminated. Our survival depends on it.

Rooftop solar, wind, and natural gas for the those times when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing. That would be a whole lot cheaper and we can do it today instead of waiting decades for some new technology to be developed.

It makes sense. Japan has had high speed rail for years...we are still in the planning stages. Things in this country lag behind because we don't consider anything other than what is politically possible right now. Our roads and bridges are falling apart, things are aging and in need of some botox injections, but we don't tackle these issues expediently because it will require either new spending or budget cuts elsewhere. You can't raise taxes in this country - especially the taxes of the rich! In fact, America exists only to protect the interests of the aristocracy, the scions of big business and vast wealth. That's why we are so far behind the developed world in nearly every category (except prison population and school dropouts), for anything to actually get done, the poor and middle class have to take one for the team. To get our economy going we gut jobs and send them overseas or by eliminating them completely, we allow banks to speculate with federally insured deposits, offer loans that are worthless and then repackaged into securities for the rich to get richer. This is how our economy works. We no longer produce or manufacture and are not capable of even basic preventative maintenence. So Japan, destroyed in WWII, endured a lost decade (because they were emulating our "capitalism") and is now thoughtfully reinvesting in itself - while we are trying to fix our oil leak (sounds so archaic) so we can get back on the road.

Repost from elsewhere, 2004: There may be Earth-like planets where big rockets were developed before nuclear reactors, and solar power satellites with capacity totalling hundreds of gigawatts are in service. They’re selling triple the energy they were 25 years before. Perhaps one or more freak accidents have occurred (airliners crashing after flying into a microwave beam and having it interact in a more or less unanticipated way with engine electronics, or some such thing).
Despite this, they have an obviously lifesaving record in comparison to the fossil fuel powerplants they have been replacing, and no mass medium will acknowledge this, nor the public’s awareness of it, because the publically funded, who profit hugely from fossil fuels, don’t like that kind of talk.
So it seems to me fission and SPS are very parallel cases, and in this world, fission got established first.
Analogous to the putative nuclear waste issue in this world would be the putative issue of kilotonnes of stuff in high orbits that may eventually decay. If nothing is being done about it now, surely that must be evidence that no-one knows what to do!
microwaves cause cancer.
Sunlight on your roof, provides all the energy you need, when combined with offshore wind, WASTE bio fuels.
Launch costs make space solar ridiculous
Solar pv is already 3 cents per KWH.
