8 Items the College Kid Never Unpacks

Some things are better left at home (sorry, Mom).

1. Laptop lock. Great in theory, but after the first couple of days, they'll most likely land at the bottom of a desk drawer.

2. Planners. Everything is pretty much done electronically these days (surprise, surprise), which includes assignments that can be easily tracked on smartphones or laptops.

3. Printers. Individual printers can take up valuable dorm space. Plus, most colleges have printing labs as well as wireless printing systems across campus.

4. Real dishes. Unless there's a sink in the dorm room, steer clear of contributing to a pile of dirty plates.

5. Iron. While some attire will require breaking out the press, it's unlikely that the everyday college attire (jeans and a T-shirt or sweater) will call for it.

6. A whole new wardrobe. A shopping spree would be nice, but it's far better to invest in a few key pieces that you'll wear often like jeans, comfy flats, and a sweater in a neutral shade.

7. Flat/top sheet. No one makes their bed. Period.

8. Binders. Most professors distribute assignments and notes through electronic portals. What's that really mean? Pretty much all assignments can be kept conveniently on laptops.
