The team at Nate Berkus Associates turns a Georgian-style home into an up-to-the-moment residence with classic appeal.

Upon first assessing their client's two-story, five-bedroom house just outside Chicago, Lauren Buxbaum of Nate Berkus Associates knew her team had its work cut out for them. "Our clients' home is large in scale," she explains. "And in terms of furniture, they were starting from scratch, so it was completely empty." Though the 1934 Georgian-style residence faced the usual challenges that accompany older homes, with the help of Michael Walczak of Stratum Builders, it was transformed room by room.

"It was important for us to score our clients an interesting blend of modern, vintage, and antique pieces," says Buxbaum. "We wanted the furnishings to feel timeless, yet young and functional." Starting with neutral wall colors, the crew mixed comfortable, clean-lined upholstered pieces with antique mirrors, midcentury tables, vintage light fixtures, and brightly colored accents.
