Don McNay has been on a book tour, promoting his book, Son of a Son of a Gambler: Winners, Losers, and What to Do When You Win the Lottery.
In a video of the book tour, McNay talks about lottery winners, structured settlements and growing up as the son of a professional gambler in Northern Kentucky.
McNay covers other topics, such as his work as a state coordinator for Al Gore's 1988 presidential campaign.
McNay offers four pieces of advice for lottery winners:
1. Don't tell anyone you won.
2. Take the money over time, instead of in a lump sum.
3. Find good lawyers and financial planners. Never be that planner's most important client. If you win $100 million, find a planner who has worked with $150 million.
4. Use your money to do something good for other people.
McNay noted that his childhood as the son of a professional gambler was good training for being in the structured settlement business.
"Newport Kentucky, where much of the book is based, was labeled, 'Sin City' to the outside world."
"I knew a lot of colorful people but I never realized they were colorful."
McNay said, "As a gambler dad knew that life is a lot of peaks and valleys. Luck runs in streaks and if you quit during a cold streak, you won't be in the game when the cards start turning your way. You have to keep going when times get tough."
