Occupy Wall Street, The Golden Calf And The New Idolatry

Posted: 10/11/11 02:19 PM ET

When the paper Mache golden calf arrived at the church, it looked ever so much like the Wall Street Bull. I am not secretly cursing. The calf animal looked like a bull animal. Our choir director and one of our ministers carried it on their shoulders, from its rented van up Thompson Street, from Houston Street, into Judson Memorial Church around 8 p.m. on Saturday night. What surprised these two religious soldiers was how many people in the open bars recognized it immediately, "Why, that is the golden calf. You know, from the bible."

James Salt of Catholics United, who was on a spiritual retreat the weekend before, made the calf. He built and designed it within three days. Why? He was inspired by the actions of Occupy Wall Street and wanted to lend spiritual and biblical support. Faith in Public Life rented the van and brought it into town. We put it on our altar, and then carried it down to Wall Street on Sunday to feature it in our multifaith worship service. We are in the process of reproducing the calf as I write. Why? The Calf has returned to D.C. for the weekend's protests there.

When the original calf arrived in our empty sanctuary on Saturday night, about a dozen of us gathered to greet it. The artist was there as well to humbly tell us how he built it. We were moved to pray, which I have to admit is not something we do that often on Saturday nights. We took turns reading Exodus 32, verse by verse. We knew where to find the original golden calf story but we had rarely heard it in the context of paper mache, built into fifty pounds of calf. We started with verse one, how the Exodus people were disappointed with the same Moses who had taken them out of the wilderness. Then Aaron was summoned to leadership. Aaron plotted an overthrow of Moses by building a new altar, a golden calf, made from the earrings of the people. (Some biblical scholars argue that the women refused their jewelry. Who knows?) The people had a big expensive party in front of their handmade idol. Then Moses came back and destroyed the calf, begged God to repent of God's wrath against the people for their idolatry. Then the people repented. And God promised not to destroy them. We remain in prayer, as the calf of Wall Street is not yet in mothballs.

On Sunday, four strong men carried the calf on their shoulders, looking more like pallbearers in a street funeral than anything else. It was hot. They had yellow sponges to cushion the calf's blow to their shoulders. How they walked the two miles with the 50-pound paper Mache calf aloft is a matter of physics. But why they did it is a matter of the spirit. They suited up so reporters would not dare call them hippies. (There is nothing wrong with hippies except that people use them to stay distant from the Occupation Wall Street's general and universal message.) The pallbearers wanted to look like the Wall Street they protested. They marched and carried because they know what idolatry is. It is the replacement of a false God for a better one. Note I did not say true one. We all know how much we have internalized capitalism. We all know our distance from the truth. The 99% don't have an enemy in the 1% so much as a need to bring money in line with human values. Our multifaith service wanted to be sure not to resemble the punishmentalists or those who are absurdly sure about the divine or who like to find someone to blame for what has gone wrong. We went for the basics of our many faiths, the golden rule which is so distanced from and by the golden calf. "Do unto those downstream from you what you would have those upstream from you do to you." This rule applies to hippies, Republicans, church members, ministers, and financiers.

We all know how little Sabbath we keep, how frequently we let other people tell us our value, our place, our position. We all know how much we have let Wall Street control the conversation, alerting us that the market is "up" today or the market is "down." We brought the calf to Wall Street to confess our allegiance to false Gods and to announce that something was dying for us. That death is our own belief in the sacred calf of the Wall Street picture of the universe. The "mike check" was just the beginning of a new conversation, between and among people, about what is really important. What is important is people owning our own times, our own tongues, our own labor, our own worth. What is dead is Wall Street's control of the conversation and us.

See why now Moses destroyed the golden calf before it became a golden bull. The physical poor are very rich, but the rich who are spiritual poor, know not how very poor they really are.  Moses was a leader of a great Nation in the millions, whom Moses served  God first, Feed My Sheep. The rich were demand to give much and the middle class who had little gave what little they could even the poor gave to the poor for all were provided for. Greed was destroyed before greed destroyed them all.

Hmmm...well, chances are that was a representation of the age of Taurus re the precession of the Equinox, and part of Hathor or Apis Bull cults. It's what they knew. It wasn't greed---it was what they grew up with. If Velikovsky is right in Ages of Chaos, the Exodus wasn't so much a escape from tyranny as it was a band of survivors, with the plagues being some disaster going on at the time. If Moses was Akhnaton things come together very nicely with Akhnaton being the first monotheist ruler from Egypt and one that they tried to wipe out of the record.

Have yet to see any religious group claiming to be a part of the mob of protesters. Interesting that anyone could state faith is part of the protest.

Wouldn't a large gold guilded money sign be better?

Isn't Wall St. reacting to the long range fear of socializing not only medicine but nationalizing banking institutions?
Then the US will be stable? and as stagnant as the social democracies of Europe?

Funny, I had a pastor that made the correlation between the golden calf of Exodus and the bronze bull in front of the NYSE some 30 years ago...
It always stuck with me.

There is a bull and a bear in front of the stock exchange. The bull representes stocks going up and the bear bats them down.

Wait what? 4 dudes, that's 12.5 pounds each... on their shoulders. No mystery here. That's just simply put as "Wasn't all that heavy".

Why is written and told every great empire fell because of the greed of the few, their wars and their jealousy. All great empires were named before they came to exist and all have fallen as told except one more empire which is name also. Love all dearly for all are dearly loved. God said Let your gold and silver save you now. Feed My Sheep.

I'm afraid this is all lost on political conservative Christians. On the one hand, the new testament scriptures suggest more of a voluntary collectivist/socialist view toward money. However, the conservatives tend to ignore this, opting instead for Old Testament promises of wealth and possessions as reward for the godly. This "Old Testament" Christianity comprises much of fundamentalist teaching. Then there's Bachmann, Perry, and Palin out there affirming Pat Robertson's belief that the wealthy shouldn't be taxed because their wealth proves God is blessing them. I know this seems crazy, but I am not making this up, nor have I misunderstood their beliefs. They love being Christians, but seem quite ignorant of the teachings of Christ.

They don't understand Occupy because they don't understand the promises of the humanism of Jesus. In the Old Testament, money was proof of piety. In the New Testament, we are taught that money is not for the taking, but for the giving. It is giving, often secretly, always without fanfare, in which we find our reward. And our reward is with Him, with his humbling assurance that we have done something pleasing to Him.

In Occupy, and in much of postmodernism, there are seeds of the heart of Christ - not that any religion should attempt to co-opt the movement - but the heart of Christ is always with those who are treated unfairly, even when the Church is the culprit. God is always on the side of the individual - not the institution.

God is a good Socialist and there is always the opposite of the other on earth. For God is the richest of all who said The earth is my footstool. God the richest of all is a Righteous God who distributes equality rights for all and God shares freely all that is His and has provided for all we ever needed, clean air, clean water, rich soil and the sun shines upon all. Even the good and evil God shares with all freely. God said. Do I not send rain upon the good and evil? Do not all breath the same air? Does the sun not shine upon all? etc. God will deal with greed for time comes to all.And when God who said I AM Victorious, Let your gold and silver save you now.

Great symbol. The Plutocracy is alive and well. Wall St is paying lobbyists to win over and pass legislation in favor of the top 1%. Wall St has paid off the Police unions (federation) so they might divide and conquer the people marching and unions..silly divide and conquer mentality When the time comes for National Guard and or police to make a moral decision on who to back and support what will they do? Support the sitting Plutocracy that is the1% which they aren't part of?? or their own?? We need social changes that must start at the top..Congress a do nothing group..both groups have become useless self-serving entities. The Supreme Court is no longer an unbiased court. 9 Trillion dollars just disappeared under Bush and no one knows where..and so on and son on

Pagan gods were usually worshiped for one of several major reasons:
1. Guilt at having to kill to eat: "spirit" of a major food source (The Ainu bear god, the "Lamb of God", etc.)
2. Fear (Fundamentalism)
3. In hopes of blessing: Ba'al, the Canaanite golden calf was worshiped in hopes he's cause the herds to increase thereby increasing the worshiper's prosperity

The people called the golden calf, the god who led them out of Israel, giving it credit for what "the LORD" (Yahweh) had done. This is a substitutionary god that takes credit for the actions of other gods. IOW, many people who believe themselves to be Christians (sacrifice for others) are actually worshipers of the golden calf (prosperity) often sitting next to each other in the same pew.

I would think that Jesus making a whip and turning over the tables of the moneylenders would be a more appropriate analogy here.

Yes Jesus knew what was coming and what was going on behind closed doors. Jesus disturbed and threaten the ill gotten gains of wealth of others, did He not. And foretold naming them even. Moneychangers? white washers? soothsayers? hypocrites? St Peter said Beware of idols. Materialism, stuff.   Written in the Bible also, written prophecy,  they even put them names on stocks? One's name is very important to God, so much so, God changed the Name of Abram to Abraham and Jacob to Israel. Names of Honor, names of men of Righteousness. God even says, Ask in my Name and it shall be giving onto you. There is no other name so powerful under the heaven.   Interesting.

NEWS FLASH
Conservative Fundraiser Wants To ‘Clear K Street Of Protesters’ By Hitting ‘A Few With A Car’ | Today, hundreds of people marched in downtown Washington, D.C. as a part of the of Occupy D.C. demonstration. Conservative fundraiser, consultant, and Principal at The Consultant Group Nathan Wurtzel reacted angrily to the protesters, tweeting that his plan to “clear K Street of protesters†is to “hit a few of them with a car“

Hey, I wonder if this is what Beck meant when he said people were going to be killed in the street.

Jesus fear not, but rather men of  greed feared Jesus. Why greed persecuted Jesus calling him names and falsely accusing Jesus of not being a true believer also. And it was those who called themselves believers holier then thou, who called Jesus not a true believer. What are we hearing today? Jesus feared no one, nor sat still he gathered all unto him in the thousands came to hear him speak. He rebuked and He questioned the deeds of others so much so, scholars of the Law feared to answer him.
