The 7 Countries With The Worst Dressed Tourists In The World (PHOTOS)

Posted: 07/20/2010 9:49 am

American is #1! Yep, again. You may recall America last topped the world rankings for worst beer. Now it seems like the 2000 people from over 80 countries who took the Titanic Awards survey think our lack of talent is multifaceted: we lead the world in bad taste. And by a comfortable margin! Not sure what got their attention... our sagging jeans, collage of colors or inappropriate use of shorts in semi-formal settings. Click through and check out the results. Disagree? Take the new survey at TitanicAwards.com. For more fun survey results and other "Worsts of Travel" tales, check out the new book The Titanic Awards.

I think the Japanese and Chinese should've won, I've always enjoyed how much they LOVE their designer labels, even when they were in the middle of the dusty and dry bush on a 100 degree day they'd still be wearing as much Chanel as they could, or when they would show up to a campfire dinner in nothing less than haute couture (seriously)....you could be eating beans and franks out of the back of a wagon and they would look like they were fresh off a Paris runway wearing the most outrageous clothes you have ever seen!

but they always had awesome cameras and equipment, and that I envied!

When it's 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity, and I'm walking kilometer after kilometer, my fashion sense is the least of my concerns.

This should just be titled, "The French & Italians are the only well-dressed tourists.. When we said Chinese and Japanese we also meant Koreans (What's the difference?)... and everyone else doesn't count, because they're just immigrants (or can't get visas, sorry!)"

while a student in germany, the gals i talked w described their bewonderment (if sarah can do it, so can i) over they way we americans clad our heft in short shorts everywhere we went, leaving thighs and then some out and exposed for all the world to see.
for me, i'd say it's the bright white tennis/running shoes worn instead of walking shoes or sandals. the increase in popularity of outdoorsy open-work shoes (ie keens, merrills) has helped diminish the white tenny trend

One reason US and Brit tourists tend to look scruffy is because we're used to having our baggage lost stolen or delayed, so we don't wear our fave outfits for our travel.

And indeed. some times we buy clothes in the countries to which we've travelled. We just don't wear them the same way as the natives!

My personal favorite is the loud fancy sweatsuit (matching jacket & pants) worn by upper middle-aged Americans. Awful, but cute in a hopeless sort of way.

I can certainly vouch for Americans that they are the worst tourists. I live in Florida and look at tourists all day. I'm ready to start a campaign to ban mandals.

It's all about knowing what to pack and how to pack.

I'd say we're also the worst dressed natives, especially if you count teenagers.

Maybe in clothes we are first, in behavior the worst ones are the english. They still snap their fingers and if possible the call the waiter " boy ".

What a crass, pointless, innacurate and meaningless generalisation; what are you basing that on?

I spend most of my year travelling around Europe for work and your bizarre caricature of an English tourist abive isn't reflective of the vast majority of Brits I encounter.

Is that tourists FROM one country or another or tourists TO a nation like ours? Do Germans in New York dress as well as Americans in Berlin?

Next they should do a list of the stinkiest tourists.

Well, Americans would NOT be in that group.
We are a bit OCD with being clean and smelling
good compared to the rest of the world.
UNTIL after 2 weeks of living out of a backpack we decided to "go native"
then all bets are off and we can stink with the best of them ;)

At home and abroad, Americans are slobs. Fortunately the rest of the world is trying to catch up so there's a slight chance we'll lose this #1 in the next century or so.
