My book, The Titanic Awards (Perigee, May 4, 2010), takes a different approach to the spectacular underachievements in travel by celebrating them. There are "World's Worst" survey results of all things plane, train, automobile and tourism. There are also entertaining hand-picked tales of incompetence and some of the worst offenders from various official studies. Plus you'll find "personal worsts" from exclusive interviews with famous travelers, from Lonely Planet's Tony Wheeler to National Geographic Traveler's Editor-in-Chief Keith Bellows. Enjoy this list!

This is ridiculous.

Yould find nasty toilet facilities in any country. Hell, the pic for Italy could just as easily come from any outdoor concert or construction site in the US...

the oddest set up i've seen was in the "fair grounds" (for the national exhibition) in the ksa. it was a long hallway, the stalls had door, entrances on both ends. the men entered one side, the women the other. the commodes were porceline and flushed. it was relatively clean, but odd that men and women would be under the same roof for toileting.

What a stupid article. I live in France & I'm sorry, my toilet looks nothing like the one depicted here. I suppose that might be because I, like the majority of people that live here do not reside in dilapidated houses that are falling apart.

Not to mention the fact that there is much worse if one decided to take a photo of a toilet at a highway rest stop.

Is that guy in india really going to the bathroom in the same exact water those kids are playing in?

wow, just wow

the children seem to enjoy it. that picture can also double as an album cover.

Ok ok, this article has been up for days and only has 252 comments. Can't you tell it bombed?

Replace with something else please.

I used to clean the toilets at bars, in college. Women are EASILY nastier than men, in public restrooms. They're total frickin' savages with other people's property. Blood, urine, vomit, excrement, tampons everywhere, condoms. With the men's room all you have to worry about is the testosterone. By that I mean that occasionally you'd see a guy rip out a mirror or sink in anger over something. But Jesus Christ that job taught me a lot about our stereotypes about men and women. Women are PIGS in public restrooms, regardless of their nationality.

And I've been a housewife cleaning toilets. You men are equally disgusting in your own way. Do you even know how to aim? If not, sit down and point. How about using a bit of toilet paper instead of shaking it out all over the place and fouling your underwear as well? Oh, and maybe if you'd cleaned the bar toilets more often, or had more stalls and proper waste receptacles for the women, the place wouldn't have gotten so messy.

Ridiculous. In many countries, toilets are almost nonexistant. Many countries, far more than mentioned, simply have squat holes and a spigot, no t.p.This blogger obviously hasn't done much traveling in the third world.

In the Tibetan countryside, there are no toilets.

My worst was in Spain. We were on a 31 day walk. I asked some women where the bathroom was and they pointed outside. Didn't see anything so I asked again. They were pointing to a field....yes a farmers field.

Turkey isn't all that bad. Just recently back from a visit there. If you stop at service stations they are actually quite good but may not have tp and towels in the holders

The BEST toilets in the world? Hands (or something else) down: Japan! They have little buttons so you can select different water jets to clean your bidniz... AND the princess toilets (likely found in public ladies rooms) have a little button that will PLAY MUSIC to cover up any particularly un-princessy sounds your body may be producing... I want one!

I'd like to see what the percentage rate is for people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. It's probably ASStrnomical.

The cleanest people on Earth, in terms of washing their hands, are American midwesterners. Every year a camera survey of airports is taken and O'Hare comes in first for men and women washing their hands, closely followed by Minneapolis.

The worst toilet in the world is in Maryland.... It was an old outhouse ... and the man who lived there went to use it and it collapsed while he was sitting there...... It took 5 days before anyone knew her was missing ; but the mail man because worried and suspicious...

The man was 9 feet down covered in krap with a broken leg and other injuries...... He was regularly visited by snakes and all sorts of insects and other critters...

He described it as 'Biblical Hell'.

Oh ... This occurred during the month of August a very warm August.

True Story !
