How the Common Good Is Transforming Our World

Posted: 10/17/10 01:31 PM ET

In my previous post I wrote about a rising social psychosis that's visible in three areas of our society. It's likely to prevail for some time, but I think it's like a wave that's crested and will crash to the shore. The reason is that the social psychosis is a backlash against a steadily growing consciousness and behavior that refocuses personal lives and public policies towards promoting the common good.

By the "common good" I'm referring to a broad evolution beyond values and actions that serve narrow self-interest, and towards those guided by inclusiveness -- supporting well-being, economic success, security, human rights and stewardship of resources for the benefit of all, rather than just for some.

It's like a stealth operation, because it hasn't become highly visible yet. But polls, surveys and research data reveal several strands of change that are coalescing in this overall direction. I describe each of them below. They may appear to be unrelated, but I think they're driven by an underlying perspective that we're all like organs of the same body, and the body doesn't thrive if any of the organs is neglected or diseased.

It's an awareness of interconnection of all lives on this planet, and a pull towards acting upon that reality in a range of ways. They include rethinking personal relationships, the responsibility of business to society, and the role of government in an interdependent world.

A 21st-Century Mindset

The rise of the common good reflects a sense of global citizenship and an obligation to be a good ancestor to future generations who inhabit this planet. In fact, it embodies behavior and policies that fit the needs for effective functioning -- both personal and political -- in our post-9/11, post-economic meltdown world.

That is, in previous posts I've argued that this new era of unpredictable change in a non-equilibrium world requires new criteria for psychological health and resiliency, beyond just effective stress management and coping. Others have emphasized the new mindset that's needed for effective business and leadership strategies in this interconnected era.

For example, Matt Bai has described in the New York Times that "[n]ow we live in an integrated world where American jobs rely on the economic policies of governments in Asia or Latin America, while our security is subject to the whims of a cleric living in a cave," and, "[w]ith global interdependence comes a certain lack of control, a vulnerability to disparate influence."

Similarly, CUNY professor and blogger Jeff Jarvis refers to a "great restructuring of the economy and society, starting with a fundamental change in our relationships -- how we are linked and intertwined and how we act."

And Umair Haque writes in his Harvard Business School blog about the new principles of a new economy "built around stewardship, trusteeship, guardianship, leadership, partnership," adding that "[a]s interaction explodes, the costs of evil are starting to outweigh the benefits." In effect, transparency will become the antidote to evil.

Let's look at some of the seemingly disparate themes of the massive shift underway that has spawned the current social psychosis.

The New Norm of Racial-Ethnic Diversity

As you read these words, the country is becoming more diverse. Some demographers believe that 2010 could be the first year that most children born in the country will be non-white. Already, five states have a majority non-white population. New York Times columnist Charles Blow captured a slice of this at the time of the passage of health care legislation, writing that "[a] woman [Nancy Pelosi] pushed the health care bill through the House. The bill's most visible and vocal proponents included a gay man [Barney Frank] and a Jew [Anthony Weiner]. And the black man in the White House signed the bill into law. It's enough to make a good old boy go crazy."

Nearly 20 percent of counties in the U.S. have, or are close to, a nonwhite majority. This shift is steadily changing the social landscape. The trend is towards movement in the direction of tolerance, acceptance and valuing -- rather than fearing or hating -- the increasingly diverse composition of American society. And that includes the rising numbers of those with multi-racial/ethnic backgrounds. Moreover, research finds that the latter group tends to be open-minded and more oriented to inclusiveness and openness.

Volunteer Service

Data show that the number of volunteers is steadily growing among all age groups. During 2009, about 64 million Americans did volunteer work (defined as unpaid volunteer activities through an organization.) That's nearly 27 percent of the populations and reflects a steady year-by-year increase, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report. And a rapid rise of volunteerism has occurred in the last decade among men and women in their 30s and 40s. Today, people describe volunteerism as part of their sense of responsibility to help others in need, not something for padding their resume.

Donations of Organs by Living Donors to Strangers

That number is steadily rising. For example, kidney donations from living donors have outnumbered those from deceased donors since 2003. Some states, such as Wisconsin, offer tax deductions for expenses related to living organ donations.

Hands-On Philanthropy

This trend is towards wanting contributions to have visible, direct impact upon people's lives. More are turning away from writing checks to well-heeled organizations like universities or cultural centers. This trend is visible among venture capitalists who bring a high-impact perspective to venture philanthropy as well as among average citizens, who increasingly contribute to international organizations that help people become more self-sufficient in daily life -- for example, through micro finance (providing small loans to individuals starting businesses in impoverished countries), or purchasing a goat for a family that relies on small farming for their livelihood, or paying the salary of a schoolteacher in an impoverished part of the world.

Responsibility for a Healthy Planet

Despite the continued denial of the reality of climate change and the human contributions to it by the GOP, a denial unmatched among major political parties around the globe, pressure continues to build, both politically and on a grassroots level, for actions that reverse or halt climate change and promote sustainable living. Among the latter are groups like 350.org, the Alliance for Climate Protection and community alliances of citizens, businesses and government such as Bethesda Green, in Bethesda, Md. This trend is underscored by the steadily rising financial contributions to environmental organizations.

Support For Human Rights

Data show a steady increase of both financial contributions to and membership in such organizations as Human Rights Watch, Save the Children, Amnesty International, Mercy Corps International and others. Even in the absence of effective action, consciousness continues to build around the perspective that violations of rights to safety, dignity and personal freedom for another -- anywhere in the world -- affect oneself, as well. In addition, the view of security and human rights is expanding to include not only freedom from violence and terrorism, but also the rights to health care, support of older citizens, rights to adequate housing, food, fair wages and other conditions. A recent U.N. report examines these issues with respect to responsibilities and actions of member nations.

Personal Success

I've written previously that men and women increasingly want a "4.0 career": one that provides more than personal recognition, power and financial reward. They want meaningful work, opportunities for continued learning and growth, a positive management culture and a team-oriented, ethical environment. They want to have impact on something larger than just their own personal success. These themes are especially pronounced among younger workers.

The Social Impact of Business

Business leaders have already bought into the need for sustainability, and many are contributing to the rise of a new business model, one that addresses social problems and serves the common good as well as achieving financial success. The "green business" movement reflects this shift, along with the concept of the "triple bottom line." Related trends include sustainable investing, social entrepreneurialism, corporate social responsibility, building a psychologically healthy management culture, and transparency via open access to information and corporate disclosure policies.

Acceptance of Gay Relationships and Gay Marriage

Acceptance of gay relationships has steadily increased, while opposition to gay marriage has steadily decreased, when tracked over the last several years, according to data from the Pew Research Center. Between one-quarter and one-third of gay and lesbian couples are raising children, a steadily rising number. And the most current surveys indicate that about half of all Americans support gay marriage.

Families And Relationships Are Transforming
A majority of Americans now say their definition of family includes same-sex couples with children, as well as married gay and lesbian couples. Regarding intimate relationships, surveys by the Gallup organization and other groups find that the quality of the relationship is more important to people today than simple allegiance to the institution of marriage. Census statistics and other data confirm this, showing, for example, a steady decline in the marriage rate over the last several decades, while cohabitation has steadily risen in each of those same decades. About half of all households today are headed by people who are single. And unmarried couples are as likely as married couples to be raising children: it's currently approaching 50 percent.

Some surveys report that at least 30 percent of those polled admit to having had an affair. Whether that's accurate or not, the upshot is that affairs are no longer viewed as immoral in today's culture. Moreover, attitudes towards prostitution are also shifting towards greater acceptance and focus on the rights of sex workers.

So, these are just some of the pervasive shifts underway. My read is that they link around an underlying theme that our culture is evolving in both consciousness and action, and that evolution will grow and strengthen over time. That's why the current social psychosis will fade. That's not only hopeful but important: The rise of the common good is both a necessary path for survival and security on an interdependent planet and the path towards personal psychological health, success and well being in this new world era.

You can stimulate common goodness by reading these inspiring books: Fool's Gold by Gillian Tett; The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein; Agenda for a New Economy by David C. Korten; Taking on the System by Markos Moulitsas Zuniga. Then get some ideas from the brilliant social action website Take Part (http://www.takepart.com), which shows how ordinary people can make a small difference and change the world.

For an interesting read on this cultural shift, check out Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawken. He calls this the largest social movement in the history of the planet, and describes how it's occurring under the radar of most of the media. In a world where there is certainly no shortage of news to despair about, it's worth the deeper dig to discover the phenomenally powerful and positive that's happening right now.

Yes! I've recommended his book to several people! He's a visionary thinker, re all of these issues, sustainability, evolution, etc. Thanks for mentioning this!

What a sweet and refreshing outlook! I sincerely hope you're right... I suppose the most any of us can do at this point is to commit to furthering positive changes by supporting causes we believe in, being kind to others, and hoping that good work is contagious. The hate and selfishness espoused by some Americans shouldn't keep any of us from living a joyful and ethical life.

I like what you are writing and that it is backed up by research but I still feel that there is a growing trend among Americans towards an individualistic, every man for himself, sink or swim, form of society. I am rereading Joseph Campbell "Myths to Live by" and he pays a lot of attention to this growing trend that he identified 30 or more years ago. He wrote specifically about the fracturing of our shared mythology and the growing trend of narrow self interest. He died some 25 years ago but I think these intervening years have proven him correct. I would like to believe you but I am not yet convinced.

I agree. I think the trend torwards volunteerism, philanthropy, etc., *is* growing as a backlash to the me vs we, individualistic nature characterizing most in the world (led by the Kings of Greed in the USA). But is this altruistic direction strong enough to change our current crash course? I don't want to hold a fatalistic perspective and live life trying to make a small, positive difference. But by and large the majority of Americans are only looking out for their immediate family and maybe a few close friends, that's it. They also do not consider future generations, just those living today. This may be a great short-term plan, but it spells utter disaster for the American Empire and humanity in general.

I believe the planet will recover just fine once we're gone. Let's just hope enough of us (and I do agree, these #s are growing) can work together, on a global rather than nuclear family scale, to keep our world habitable for a very long time to come.

@jengele and silk olive -- the way I see it is that we're in a period of great tension between these two forces, but I believe that the shift I'm describing is the greater, evolving direction of humanity. However, the pull in the regressive direction is powerful. We can't predict the outcome with certainty, but I think this period of tension and conflict will be with us for some time to come, as global interconnection continues to fuel positive evolution over the long run.

The real issue is each side in the politicail world are unwilling to meet in the midle. Dems don't have all the answers and rep. don't have all the answers but both act as if we don't do as they say we are doomed. each is more interested in protecting the party than solving problems. each side have become masters of the fear tactic it's just the easiest way to control sheep. perfect example when bush was in ,war protests were constant. obama in office, war protests not so much. The only change in the whitehouse was party.

As a still registered Republican (????????), I can tell you there is a huge difference in party. While the Democrats here and there serve vested interests, the Republican party is an out and out shill for the super wealthy. Every average American vote for a Republican is a vote to convert the US into just another Banana republic, with great gated mansions on the hill and a vast sea of slums below.
01:42 PM on 10/18/2010
that must be why super wealthy kennedy clan would have you arrested if you walked down the beach at the kennedy compound, but complained if anyone brings up illegal aliens. john kerry complains about the rep. sending jobs over sea's but he buys a 7 million dollar boat from another country, then tries to register it in delaware to save taxes.

The "left vs right/Dems vs Repubs" argument is an archiac, political shell game. There is no more left vs right, only corporate power vs people power. A vote for present day Republicans is another step towards complete corporate domination of our political system. A vote for most Dems is exactly the same thing, however We the People do have a few more friends on the Dem side.

Citizens United was a gigantic step towards Fascism. We need campaign finance reform and term limits
or we'll continue to have the choice between two corporate lap dogs who care nothing for the American middle class.

What you are stating of course is the universal law of balance. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction,is how it is termed in the field physics. In the universe at large, creation is always offset by destruction. So in the ways of mankind, which are totally subject to this universal law of balance, as things grow worse in one regard they grow better in another. It's always a wash--BALANCE.

The underlying rubbish that will make the Empathy Wave Crash is the theft of charitable contributions by Greedy Ba5tards in Govt and individuals taking funds intended for the starving, ill or otherwise in needy of this world. You can count on the Greedy Narcissists to ruin a noble thing. Once people see that their hard earned funds aren't making it the needy but are instead padding the pockets of the evil overlords and Crooks...They'll give up on being Charitable.

So what would you suggest instead? That we not even try to cultivate empathy? That we simply give up our values entirely because they might be misused? I remember a similar argument Thrasymachus made to Socrates, that justice was in the interest of the stronger because standing against the strong would just put your head in the noose's neck.

I'm not completely sure I understand what you're trying to say. Do you mean that you want people to give up being charitable, or did you mean that regretfully?

All of these values obviously are central for contemporary "progressives." Too bad such a small minority of American voters shares these values. Until a real working political majority supports these values, they will be hamstrung in America, since the "progressive" media alone have convinced as many Americans as they can convince, and that's still a small minority, alas. Which is why the hard right will drive the Democrats from power across the board in DC and the statehouses of America in the next two years.

My view is that this is a deeper, broader trend building, transcending political perspectives per se. An evolution of mentality, one could say. But time will tell...

"The trend is towards movement in the direction of tolerance, acceptance and valuing -- rather than fearing or hating -- the increasingly diverse composition of American society."

This is to be celebrated and also lamented where it concerns the lateness of the hour and just now getting around to -- the basics. How many have languished and perished in the wicked web of societal heartlessness as we zoomed technologically, but socially -- inched along, decade (if not century) after life affecting decade? Also, it is good news if indeed more than the balance of hue changes and the balance of love is made more significant, otherwise, same old stuff -- different day, or meet the new society, the same as the old society. I see signs in all directions of being from many sources.

Love, serenity, and prosperity to all in this – our time. Where prosperity extends beyond the wallet to the heart, mind, and spirit of the person. LSP to all.

It's a race, alright, and it's gonna be won by a hair, if it's won at all. We haven't reached critical mass yet, though there's enough of us now that if each of us 'converted' another to the benefits and joys of fair cohabitation on the planet we'd be close to it (critical mass). I keep tryin' with these posts and comments, to bring others, anyone, to the next level of awareness; don't know what impact I have, but am compelled to do my bit.

I know the change is coming, and not having been able to persuade either of my families--the one I was born into and the one that came through my womb--to join me in the race to kindness and empathy, I left them behind, hoping to impact other lives to join me. So far, though, other than my posts and comments, I've only succeeded in gaining one long-term ally, my BFF and life companion, so I'm hoping that the change I know is coming will come while I have some years of health and enjoyment left. In the meanwhile, I live in Oregon paradise, green year round--lots of evergreens--with a marvelous view of a stream and its soothing sound, hoping to live long enough to become a valued member of a community, rather than just a couple, no offense to my partner, and he knows it, as he longs for the same.
09:58 PM on 10/19/2010
In your reflection of light and darkness I feel the growth derived from the journey traveled.

Change is “gonna” come?

They say taxes and death are the sure things. I say change is the only sure thing and change is comprised of taxation and death, or some money vs. less or more money (depending on your relationship to the tax person who cometh), and change is comprised of life as we know it -- vs. life as we cannot know until we realize that thing we call death.

In our time we are given a great canvas upon which to paint an individual masterpiece of a journey to inborn potential, in space and time, and that is self love/realization, and in our time, we are collectively given a great canvas upon which to paint a story of hope for all...progress transformative and transcendent, a great turning of the wheel, a thorough nurturing of the seed of nation and world...and that is love/realization of all. Nothing is promised and all is possible until disproved by the turn of the wheel of fate and by the choices we make. Can we manifest destiny? I think so. The Republicans think so. The Democrats think so. Everyone claims they are in control, in charge, that they know what needs to be done, even if it is -- nothing at all. Many claim to be the masters of fate, but upon close examination you see that such fate is limited, fleeting, and trivial.
09:59 PM on 10/19/2010
Keep sowing the seeds hippynanainblingland, the people are fertile for love and change. Keep attending to realized needs, for the struggle can drain. It is not for legacy’s sake that I love. It is because when there is nothing else there is always love. Thus, love remains the truth, the proof, the absolute, the most compelling , that which defines or is telling about a heart and mind. When we assemble to beat the drums for love and the beat pours out, rises up, and rains down from above, we shall be drenched in love and then we will turn to address every major issue in turn, with energy to burn, and solutions to bear, but also the realization of continuous lessons to learn.

If all of this takes you aback and you somehow consider me whacked, that is ok, I am so radical I dare to love in a world of hate hypocrisy and selfishness, so I do and I can draw a stark contrast. Somehow, I think you can connect.

Be as you are all while you realize – the possibilities of you, that is what I try to do.

American liberal concerns with equal rights for folk of all races, for gays and for women are not shared by rightist Americans and are certainly not shared globally.

If the two goals of equality for gays and for women are placed at the top of the agenda then dialogue with many organizations and countries becomes impossible.

Many people overseas that the US deals with are homophobic and against equal rights for women.

Actually the opposite is true, the shortsighted focus on rights for gays ( while laudable) detracts from
all the good happening in other spheres , such as the growing world wide solidarity against state terrorism and the growth of a feeling of oneness with man and nature that is slowly but surely reshaping our world for the better.

While a small percentage of Americans , in my view represent the highest evolutionary development of mankind on earth, The American State and business community continue to express the most primitive and reptilian thinking on the planet !

This is darkly realistic. American "progressives" live in a fantasyland of their own in which they can't imagine that "progressive" values won't simply win over the planet in the end. Lots of luck. They can't even win over a working American majority. Fox, Rush, and the rest constantly crush the left with the white, uneducated American masses because they appeal to their worst instincts, not the "best" ones the "progressives" wish were there, but apparently are NOT.

I think a broader perspective is helpful, here -- that viewing only a slice of time shows conflict of forces in our society, but looking more broadly, via some of the data and evidence I presented, suggests a longer range shift or evolution in our mentality, our consciousness, building over time. It's from the bottom up, so to speak, that transcends the current conflicts. Thanks for your comments!

America is moving toward corporate fascism. There is no significant opposition to the military budget or homeland security. The right-wing is attacking any education spending that is public, even that supporting private investment.

Almost thirty years ago, one of America's greatest progressive intellectuals, Christopher Lasch, wrote a great, prophetic book called The Revolt of the Elites, in which he excoriated the American upper-class forged at the Harvards and Yales of America for becoming the epicenter of the Boomer's "culture of NARCISSISM" (Lasch's phrase too). The tragic thing is that the poor, uneducated American whites who have suffered most from elitist selfishness are being played like a violin by Fox, Rush, and the Tea Party, all literally HIRED by the very elites the poor clods think they are revolting against by listening to Fox, Rush, and the Tea Party. It's all the elites' ultimate con for the clods. The elites have no problem hiring demagogues like Palin who come straight out of the uneducated mob itself, in order to ruin the mob even faster. Behind the scenes, Harvard and Yale will keep pulling all the strings, even if they have a puppet who looks just like the mob she's conning, to manipulate at will. Who cares what the front person is like if they people who run the country into the ground for their own profits are unchanged, as they will be?

All true, but as long as Americans have their minds controlled by the media, we will continue our downward spiral. Television and movies have become the virtual mind of our society, and it is a very sick mind indeed.
07:54 AM on 10/18/2010
Mind control by the media is not just in America, but throughout the world. In developing countries without basic countering mechanisms in place, it is all the more sick.
