The American Mustache Institute has opened nominations for the 2013 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year, which Mexican telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim and Ladies Home Journal have called on par with the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 27. A pool of finalists will then be selected by AMI's certified nuclear mustacheologists and unveiled for voting beginning Monday, Sept. 30. The winner will announced announced in Pittsburgh at 'Stache Bash 2013, benefitting Steps to Independence, a non-profit focused on Conductive Education for children with motor disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

"While the Heisman Trophy recognizes quarterbacks and professional autograph salesmen, the Goulet award represents all that clean and sexy in America today," said Dr. Adam Paul Causgrove, chief executive officer of the American Mustache Institute who was named the Goulet award winner by popular vote in 2012. "We thank Robert's lovely wife Vera Goulet who allows us to honor her late husband for his greatness with this hallowed award."

The Goulet is not a best mustache award, but recognizes the person who has best represented or contributed to the Mustached American community during the past year.

Past winners include St. Louis Cardinals pitcher John Axford, Orlando-area firefighter Brian Sheets, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Clay Zavada, and retired New York City police detective Tim Galvin.

Intriguing finalists for 2013 include Boston resident David Henneberry, who found Boston bombing suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev in his boat; actor Will Ferrell as he reprises his role as "Ron Burgundy;" astronaut Chris Hadfield, television host Steve Harvey, and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
