Rick Springfield and His Devoted Fans: Full of Hope and Promise After All These Years

Posted: 11/05/11 11:44 AM ET

How old were you when Jessie's Girl hit the top of the charts and won a Grammy? Do you remember that Rick Springfield first appeared as Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital during that same year--1981? In An Affair of the Heart, a new documentary film about Springfield and his devoted fans, Emmy® Award winner Sylvia Caminer takes us back 30 years on that journey.

Viewers might expect to see two 40-plus year old stay-at-home-moms from New Jersey, enjoying "Mom's Night Out", reliving their youth and swooning as 60-plus year old Springfield croons on stage. Though they at first seem cliché, Caminer unfolds JoAnn Camporeale's and Sue DeVita's stories in surprising ways, showing their joy as well as the impact their fandom has on their own families.

However, Caminer takes viewers backstage with unlikely personalities they don't expect: 55 year old minister Kate Dennis of North Carolina; a 40-something couple, Chicagoans Jill and Steve Antipas, who found each other through Springfield's music; and 15 year old guitar rocker Dustin Walker from rural Illinois. While their "Rick stories" are all unexpectedly deep and inspiring, the most powerful fan story portrayed on film is that of Laurie Bennett, a 43 year old perky and sincere Southern California redhead, who credits Springfield's music and her devotion to him with rehabilitating her through the most difficult time of her life.

The film is a labor of love for Executive Producer Melanie Lentz-Janney, herself a 30 year fan, who conceived the project and convinced Caminer to get on board. When they approached Springfield, he agreed to participate in the film.

"I actually was really blown away when I saw it," Springfield says.

"I thought they would film a couple of shows and film a couple of fans saying, 'I have liked him since I was a kid.' . . . I have never seen a music documentary like that. It was a real laugh/cry kind of thing. As a person, I am kind of peripheral. It is about their connection, what they view and how they interpreted who I was, and the right times that music that they liked came along to help them to get through difficult stuff. And I definitely get that because I was a real loner of a kid in high school. . . .The only thing that gave me comfort was songs, artists that I love." He adds, "I get the stories. I am very proud to be part of it, but it is more their power than mine."

Caminer skillfully weaves together fan stories with Springfield interviews and biography, live concert appearances, and the fans' journeys to the annual Rick and Friends Concert Cruise. Springfield, now 62 will host his final cruise November 5-10. "I love the whole club feel of doing something like that. It is a very, very different thing--certainly a unique fan experience, nothing like it. No concert anyone does even comes close. You are on a boat with these people for five days, and they get to see you morning, noon, and night. So, the real you has got to be front and center."

While An Affair of the Heart exposes the difficult and personal stories of his fans, it addresses tough times for Springfield too--depression, a teen suicide attempt, marital infidelities. Yet, the film's significance lies in its portrayal of resilience, not only for the onetime teen idol and those who worshiped him, but also his decades-long marriage, his song-writing, and the enduring spirit of a talented artist who still performs 100 concerts per year.

"I don't think people will expect that message of 'resilience' to come from a Rick Springfield documentary", says producer Lentz-Janney. "It's real life . . . . we think it will be very surprising for people to see that a pop icon from the 80's who suffers from clinical depression has made and continues to make such a positive impact on the lives of many, many people. He makes a lot of people happy . . . what a gift." She continues: "We hope people will walk out of our film . . . and do some soul-searching to discover their own Rick Springfield, their 'happy place' from years gone by that is still alive within them."

Springfield says a highlight of the upcoming final cruise for him will be bringing his Australian band, Zoot back together after 40 years. "The last time I saw these guys, we are all 21. We look pretty good actually. All of us have our hair, and we are all in shape," he says.

On aging, Springfield says "Once I passed 40, age didn't matter anymore. I certainly didn't think I would be here like this at 62. When I was a kid I thought 62 meant you are done."

Although the reunion cruise will be the final one, Springfield doesn't plan to retire from doing what he loves. "There is a ton that I still want to do," he says. "I am very driven, and it is very hard for me to lie still on a beach actually."

While Caminer is completing her final cut of An Affair of the Heart for festivals and distribution, Springfield plans to "Continue and work better on my writing and performing. All the things I do, just take them further . . . I think we just scratch the surface of all our possibilities. I know there is more, and I want to pursue that."

"I feel very vibrant and alive and full of hope and promise."

GREAT article!! I have been a fan since 1980 - 1981. I have been on 2 cruises.Met Rick more than I can count on both hands and feet! When I first met him in 2005, crowds were small and intimate than now. But, I have met great friends along the way that I wouldn't change for a smaller group. When I met him I hoped I would be disappointed. But, it was quite the opposite. He was nicer than I ever imagined. He was warm, sincere, personable, down to earth, and a human being like the rest of us. He doesn't make you feel like you are talking to a celebrity or musician but instead talking to a genuine person who appreciates everyone that is in his circle of friends, family, or fans. I look forward to a 'Rick hug'. He is a hard habit to break. It is different than just seeing him in concert. It is hard to explain and you won't 'get it' until you meet him. I haven't seen the documentary but I look forward to it and I think I speak for most of us when I say each of us could have been featured and it must have been hard to narrow it down to the ones they chose. I can't begin to tell my story of how Rick impacted my life because it would be a book but I cherish every moment. I hope he gets a TON of attention this document deserves.

I am one of those people who has an affair of the heart with Rick Springfield and was lucky enough to go on all of the cruises and this last one where we got to view the documentary and it was amazing. I was moved by it and I think people who aren't necessarily Rick Springfield fans will find it very touching and funny too. I was very impressed. I hope it gets the audience it deserves.

I had the priviledge of seeing this film on the cruise this year. I was at three of the events that were filmed...the concert in Joliet, IL...the book signing in Naperville, IL...and cruise #3 to the Bahamas and Turks / Caicos.

My first concert was Rick Springfield back in 1982. I took a break until 1999 when a friend that I worked with asked me if I liked him...because he was going to be playing in her hometown. We went...I felt like a teenager again...but it was so much different (in a good way). And, here we are today. The special bond between Rick and his fans is what keeps me going back time and again. Thank you to Melanie and Sylvia for capturing what it is that we all feel when we go to a Rick show!

Great article, Dr. Cicero! I have not had the opportunity to see this film yet. However, I have been following the Yellow Rick Road since Melanie & Sylvia began the process of casting for this film last year. From what I understand, my story was one of 500+ they received. How they narrowed it down to 7 fans is an art into itself. My brother is a filmmaker, so he made me keenly aware of what it takes to make a film, especially a feature documentary. It's a huge undertaking. These women have done a tremendous job of communicating with the fan community. From all the feedback I've heard, they produced a stellar film worthy of celebrating a gifted musician and soulful human being. My hats off to them, to Rick, and to his devoted fans. Rick's music is the soundtrack of my life and I am very proud to be a Rick Springfield Fan! I applaud Melanie for going after her dream and the team at YRR for making it happen! I can't wait until it hits the film festival circuit, they lock in a very fortunate distributor, and the world gets to see Rick for the incredible person/talent that he is. : )

THIS COMMENT WAS WRITTEN BY "SAMIAM" ... she contacted me and said she was having issues posting on this site. I told her I would send it to Dr. Cicero to post. It ended up posting on my page. LOL!! I don't see a delete option, so it may be here to stay.

Since I am on here, just want to say thank you to Dr. Cicero and to those of you who have commented on our film. You may keep up with film at www.rickspringfielddoc.com and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/yellowrickroad.

We have only done 2 private screenings at this point. Once we know when/where we will be doing our big public premiere we will post that info on our website and Facebook/Twitter sites.

THANKS FOR FOLLOWING THE YELLOW RICK ROAD ... : )

I've been a life-long Rick Springfield fan so fully expected to love the film no matter what. My husband, on the other hand, barely tolerates me playing his music around the house and begrudginly accompanies me to concerts when my girlfriends can't come. So you can imagine my surprise when I looked over at him watching the movie and saw tears streaming down his face. Afterwards, he said, "Now I 'get it' and most definitely have a much greater appreciation for Rick and all he's done over the years." Needless to say, he's now almost as big of a fan as I am. The film was incredibly moving and well done. Thank you!

Dr. Cicero, Thank you for bringing to light this documentary in all of its colorful layers of the human condition. I found the film to be so much more than a story about Rick Springfield and/or a story about a few select fans of his, but rather a story of contrasting human connections denominated with universal threads regardless of who or what the catalyst is. Congratulations to Melanie and Sylvia for documenting the known fact that music resonates in all of us, in all forms, whether it be socially, physically, intellectually, or emotionally. We all have a 'Rick Springfield' that touches us and some of us have been fortunate enough to find him ; ) Thank you for celebrating that. Bravissime!

Yes. I decided myself that it was about resilience rather than the specific people.
We all have it in us.

If you have ever been a fan of any artist, I know you will appreciate this movie. Melanie and Sylvia tell the fan stories from a real human connection experience. Rick is truly a unique artist and appreciates his fan base that isn't seen in most performers today. Their story really brings it all together!

Fans from Germany are also touched by the documentation!
My sister and I were this year for the first time on the cruise and were able to see the movie. We are totally overwhelmed! Last year Rick was in Weingarten/Germany - after "25 hard years without him" a great concert! We are Rick Springfield Fans since the 80', unfortunately he is in Germany a little forgotten. We had all these years no idea what happened in the USA, how he touched his fans what his fans are doing for him and what a lovely, simple musical genius he is!
*** A big thank you to the Yellow Rick Road Team! We hope that the fans in Germany can watch this film soon - we are now even bigger fans of Rick. And a big thank you to Rick, who accompanied us with his music throughout our lives, thank you!

I had the privilege of going on the RS Cruise and seeing the documentary under the stars. I was pleasantly surprised and deeply moved by several of the stories. When Rev. Kate revealed her trauma and how Rick's songwriting helped her heal...this is the heart of why we have all been fans for 30+ years. Bravo to the filmmakers. And thank you to Rick who continues to bring us all together for the best times of our lives.

I had a chance to see the documentary on the Rick Springfield cruise. I had heard bits and pieces about the documentary, but was very excited to see it for myself. I was definitely not disappointed. I have been a fan for 30 years and while many may deem that as just silly and wrongly write Rick off as a "one hit wonder", this documentary only confirms what I have known all along. The film makers did a stellar job of telling the stories of these fans. I found myself relating to every single one of them, whether it is a teenage admirer or a stay at home mom. I have been both of those. Rick has been a constant in my life since the 7th grade. Back then, he was entertainment, now he has become a life-changing part of my life. I have formed many real true friendships because of him and I cannot imagine it any other way now. Thank you to Melanie Lentz-Janney and Sylvia Caminer for capturing such a wonderful portrayal of....well, US.

I think any fan of a musician or actor will always enjoy getting an up close and personal look into the lives of that celebrity. We love to see documentaries on them and read books about them. But what makes this movie so great is that it really isn't about Rick, but about the fans - and lets face it, without us, they wouldn't be the celebrities they are. This is a refreshing 360 degree look at a celebrity: Rick the musician and how he affected his fan base, stories about the fans and how we have affected him. That is always an element that is missing - how do we the fans affect the celebrity. Rick is so genuine and the stories so touching that it makes this movie unlike any other - it isn't informational, it's emotional.
Great movie and great article. Thanks so much for both.

After a year-plus of anticipation about this documentary, seeing the cameras follow all us fans on the ship and at different concerts, I wasn't sure what to expect from the documentary. When I had the chance to see it last week on the cruise (my third), I was blown away. The storytelling was artful, the editing was masterful, and the music helped connect it all. It was so much deeper than I expected and I was drawn in completely. Sylvia Caminer and Melanie Lentz-Janney have translated "a Rick Springfield thing you just wouldn't understand" into a moving piece about how this man and his music are as relevant to us today as they were when we heard the first chord of "Jessie's Girl."

Thank you for your thoughtful and up beat review of An Affair of the Heart. It's been an incredible journey making this film. The seven featured fans are a cross-section of a vast fanbase which spans multiple generations; I was privileged to be one of them. It's a film that's a sensory experience of many layers and will appeal to fans and non-fans alike. Rick's music continues to touch many lives through his incredible understanding of the human condition and ability to express feelings with words that could be your own.
