Time for a Little Honesty: Sometimes Muslims Burn Qurans

Posted: 02/23/2012 1:21 pm

Twenty years ago, back in the "good old days," when Rambo still fought alongside the Mujahedeen in Hollywood and Osama bin Laden still worked in Afghanistan for the U.S. Department of State, I discovered I had a problem.

Back then, as a newly "reverted" Muslim, whenever I went to the mosque, people kept handing me leaflets, advertisements and calendars with snippets of the Arabic Quran on them. And although they meant well, pretty soon, those leaflets started to pile up at home: because although I realized I couldn't just throw them out in the garbage like any other trash, I didn't know what else to do!

However, when I brought my conundrum to the imam I learned the answer was actually an easy one with a long scholarly tradition to support it. He told me the most respectful way to deal with God's message to Muslims -- in it's original Arabic format -- was to burn the paper and ink it was delivered with, and give God's message back to God.

So when Quran burning first hit the popular media a few years back, I have to admit I didn't really understand what the problem was. Obviously, someone idiotic enough to want to burn God's message to God's servants without even reading it wasn't going to respect it, no matter what else he did with it: I figured sending it back to our shared Creator was the probably the wisest thing he would ever do!

So despite the heat of current controversy surrounding the U.S. Army's recent attempt to burn old Qurans in Afghanistan, if Muslims are being honest, we'll admit that burning them is one of the ways Muslims discard old "well-used" Qurans, too.

Granted it's not preferable: Qurans deserve better treatment than short snippets of phrase, and so an honorable burial, or being sunk to the bottom of a running stream, is better. Regardless, it's not the paper or the ink that really matters, it's the message those words deliver that Muslims love the most. And to honor that message, when the vessel that contains it no longer proves adequate to God's purpose of high-fidelity transmission, we give it back to God.

However, a better way to honor it is to actually live by it, and frankly, that's where we seem to be falling short these days. Now, don't get me wrong. I understand why Muslims get upset with non-Muslims disrespecting our religion. But the thing is, our religion has very specific advice about what to do when that happens! And no-where does it say we're supposed to kill or be killed!

Instead, even though honor mattered to pre-Muslim Arabs in Muhammad's day as much as it seems to matter to Muslims today again, since it didn't matter one whit to Muhammad back then, it still shouldn't matter to Muslims now at all.

He told his followers very specifically that his honor wasn't worth getting hurt for, and even with an army behind him he wasn't willing to fight for it himself: In fact, while Muhammad was alive he brought the way Arabs worshiped honor over life to a crashing end. Don't believe me? Check out what happened at Hudaybiyyah. Because what happened there brought peace to the Middle East for Muslim and non-Muslim alike, which was one of the main purposes of Muhammad's Islam.

Now it seems we're back to where we started: Our world is being torn apart by tribal, national and religious chauvinism, just like it was being torn apart back then. However, the good news is, Muslims generally figure that what worked back then should still work today, right?

So, when someone burns a Quran, what should Muslims do? I don't think anyone's said it any better than Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, who chairs the mosques and community affairs committee of the Muslim Council of Britain:

"What is captured on the pages can be printed again. If they burn 1,000, we can print 10,000. What's the big deal? ... A NATO soldier killing innocent people is far more painful than the burning of a Quran. I would rather they burn 100 Qurans than to hurt one woman or man or child."

And that's the message we should be focused on, because it's not just the Muslims who aren't following their book, it's everyone else too. America today, despite invading Iraq and Afghanistan, an invasion that's resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children for the sake of vengeance and American security still considers itself a "Christian" nation. And didn't Jesus once say something about turning the other cheek?

And while we're at it, God was pretty clear in the beginning, that He was putting the Jews in charge of the Holy Land because they'd bring God's benevolent Justice, and God's benevolent Peace to all people's living there, something the Quran confirms.

Israel wants security, and Palestine wants justice. Judaism and Islam, on the other hand, both say you're not following either religion until you want for your neighbor what you want for yourself.

Enough said?

So while like every other Muslim out there I honestly believe that Muhammad's Islam holds the answer for everyone, it's not like you might think, if you don't know Muhammad like I know Muhammad.

Because if you go by the actual record of what he did, rather than the rhetoric that surrounds it, Muhammad didn't bring God's peace by making everyone live up to Muslim standards. No, he made everyone live up to their own standards instead: He made Christians be better Christians, he made Jews be better Jews, and he made Muslims be better Muslims.

So what he did? Well, I think that's what we should do too.

And enough about Qur'an burning!

My favorite quote: "Israel wants security, and Palestine wants justice. Judaism and Islam, on the other hand, both say you're not following either religion until you want for your neighbor what you want for yourself." Thank you for that summary, Dr. Liepert.

Re: disposal of the Qurans. Dr. Rehmatulah, Vice President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community said that they must be disposed of respectfully. Burning a Quran is the most respectful way to dispose of the Quran. Unfortunately, when NATO workers unceremoniously dumping piles of Qurans into a garbage fire, did not appear respectful.

Having said that, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is in full agreement. The Quran burning does not give Muslims permission to become violent.

Dr. Liepert again calls for peace - this time surrounding the issue of burning Qurans. A similar (although less religious) issue comes up once in a while around burning national flags: some veterans get fighting mad whenever they see that happen. What one person is casual about, another can be highly volatile around. I can appreciate the Afghani people feeling that foreign troops were treating something important to them with disrespect, and then getting angry enough to fight over it. We felt the very same way about the attacks upon our cities and people on 911: foreign people came here and destroyed lives and property casually - and then were taken in by regimes such as the Taliban when we sought to bring them to justice for the mass murder. We as a nation killed Osama bin Laden and thousands of his followers for what happened to us, and we're not done with our vengeance yet. The Quran-burning incident is still a hot topic in some quarters, and will remain so if religious and political leaders don't help to cool things down. This article is such an attempt to bring the public discourse down a notch from high boil, but I anticipate certain groups to belittle both Liepert's call for peace and his interpretations of the Quran. Some people are always ready for a fight.

Why don't the Afghanis show their disappointment by blowing up more priceless Buddhist shrines in their country?
11:54 PM on 02/26/2012
you mean the same shrines that had survived hundreds of years with the afghans and muslim rule? how short our memory is when we need our 'facts' to make sense...

"Now, don't get me wrong. I understand why Muslims get upset with non-Muslims disrespecting our religion"

Upset might be a bit of an understatement don't you think?

The only way to properly dispose of an old or damaged Quran is to burn it. When a non-Muslim burns one it is seen as a blasphemous act. The situation in Afghanistan and the Qurans is only the tip of the iceberg. Militants are exploiting the situation to express deep resentment of foreign presence in their country. TIME FOR THE US TO GET THE F%&K OUT THAT PLACE ONCE AND FOR ALL.

No riff, that's not true: as I've written either burial or being sunk in running water is better. However, this article is about the fact that it is the responsibility of those of us who aren't living (and dying) in Afghanistan to work to quell the conflict, which was begun by the Russians in the 70s, fanned by the Western world as our "cold-war" heated up there (during which time al-Qaeda and the Taliban were created, to fight the Russians), and then compounded by the Americans when they invaded in 2001 and put the Afghan equivalent of the Corleone family in charge. It's no surprise innocent people are dying, and no surprise that innocent people are angry. You dont' give the Afghan people enough credit: they are no different from you, and you'd be no different from them if your last 40 years had been the same. My grand-mother practiced medicine in Kandahar in the 50's, and when she lived there it was a city of gardens and universities.
Yes, this article is about Muslims outside Afghanistan being honest, and working honestly for the same of peace there and everywhere.
However, it's time for the rest of you to be honest and to begin working honestly for the sake of peace there too.

However, rest assured it's up prominently on The American Muslim, and websites associated with my own Faith of Life Network as well.

In all honestly, it seemed to me most Non-Muslims made this a huge deal more than any Muslims than I know of.

It always seemed like a pretty weak act; if one's god is so powerful, surely a burned book is no big deal and will not harm that power, right? Everyone is aware that books won't last forever and that occasionally they need to be discarded or destroyed, so it's not like the book wasn't destined to be destroyed at some point.

I realize it's not exactly the same, but as a lad I used to be bothered by demonstrators burning American flags, but then I realized their actions don't actually harm me or my country in the least. It's essentially an empty act so why be bothered? Reacting to it with violence is just sad and absurd.

Seems to me that some will look for any excuse to do evil, like the school bullies who will do anything they can to elevate their own self to some imagined position of superiority.

It is important to put things into perspective here, while it is true that it is permissible to burn old and dilapidated Quran in Islam, we are talking about a community who for the most part are themselves illiterate and uninformed about their own faith. The Taliban and other radical elements in the region of course spare no time taking advantage of the situation to garner the public to support their effort to fight the occupation of their country.

Unfortunately, some in the west equally, ( as the Taliban ) are taking advantage of the situation to malign and smear the rest of the Muslims world.

I know Knocker, and it's breaking all our hearts: religion isn't the opiate of the masses, sometimes it seems it's more like it's crack cocaine for some, that can be easily identified in ALL our faiths.

Thank you for the wonderful article, Dr. I've always told the detractors that burning a Quran can't burn away the message from my memory. If they feel they want to draw the prophet Mohammad (PBUH), they can draw until they run out of ink, but they can't make me recognize the image.

I am upset because

They send these young boys and girls to far off countries without even minimum knowledge about the culture or religion.
They threw the Quraans in the trash, because they DIDN"T KNOW.

Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, is right burn Quraans, destroy Mosques but please stop killing.

By the way when did South Asians ever need a reason to riot, sadly it is in our DNA.

"please stop killing. By the way when did South Asians ever need a reason to riot"

Here is what is happening in Pakistan (99% Muslim):

1. Political parties like the Sipah-e-Sahaba Party (SSP) are devoted to killing Shia. From a UN study:
http://www.unhcr.org/refworld/country,,IRBC,,PAK,,440ed73f34,0.html

"Activities of the SSP have ranged from "organizing political rallies calling for Shi'as to be declared non-Muslims [and] assassinating prominent Shi'a leaders" to the "indiscriminate" killing of Shiites, including attacks on Shiite mosques."

2. Ahmadiyya have been declared to be non-Muslims. They can be imprisoned for 3 years for saying "salaam alaikum" or otherwise "posing as Muslims." Wikipedia:

"28 May 2010 saw the worst single incident of violence against Ahmadis.. when several members of an extremist religious group (allegedly Tehrik-e-Taliban Punjab) entered two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore and opened fire.... attacks claimed the lives of 95 people and injured well over 100."

3. It is unnecessary to state that non-Muslims like Hindus are treated worse than animals. A Pakistani newspaper article titled ""Persecuted Hindus migrating in hordes"
http://www.thenews.com.pk/TodaysPrintDetail.aspx?ID=78099&Cat=4

"No official figures on forced conversions are available but the HRCP believes that the numbers are high. In most cases, young Hindu girls are abducted, converted, and forced to marry Muslim men. In some cases, they have also been forced into prostitution."

Thank you for your list, Pakistanis have always been cruel and " _____" can't think of a right word now.

Do you not know what they did in Bangladesh in 1971?

So now they are doing it to their own people. I just hope that people will be smart enough to realize that Islam is far greater than Pakistan.

Just like people wouldn't want Hinduism to judged by the actions of few thousand Shiv Shenas.
