11 Longevity Tips

As we bid farewell to the old year and welcome 2011, let us reflect on what we've learned and how we have grown. Perhaps we may examine the steps we've taken to improve our health and well being. Many of us like to make New Year's resolutions, making countless promises to ourselves that are not always easy to follow through with. Rome wasn't built in a day, so for year 2011, let's start by making one small step at a time that will eventually lead to monumental results!

Commit To Fitness

Is your gym membership collecting dust? Anticipating the New Year and a new body, you may have promised yourself to become a fitness guru. If physical activity isn't already a part of your daily or weekly routine, start by adding 20 minutes of walking twice a week this month to boost your mood and fitness level.

If the cold is keeping you in, try 20 minutes a day of dancing or cardio. Setting smaller goals each month won't overwhelm you as much as taking on multiple tasks. Baby steps will lead to giant leaps!

We have been eating super lowfat, fiber filled, superfoods from The Indian Slow Cooker book. The meals use dried beans, tons of superfoods (the cheap, common ones), and are super delicious. They cost PENNIES to make!! Her Rajmah is an Indian Chili that is made with kidney beans. I think I will be doing Kris Carr's 21 day cleanse coming up in a few days. Think she is on Good Morning America the am of the 17th. Her book "Crazy, Sexy, Diet" is beautifully done.

The benefits of low fat pasteurized dairy will squashed someday. Full fat, unpasteurized dairy from healthy, grass fed cows and goats is the way to go!

Thanks for the tips! One of my favorite quotes is (i'm paraphrasing and don't know where I got it) "your body is less likely to wear out from activity than it is to get rusty from being sedentary. I know I should do it, I do all these other things, but I DESPISE exercising. I avoid it at all costs. Does anyone have any tips on how to make it more bearable?

Few things:

-do something you enjoy that doesn't involve going to the gym...(gyms are boring and make can turn exercising into a chore) some examples are rock climbing, dance classes, yoga or a martial art
-go for nature walks
-turn everyday activities like biking up to the grocery store/book store/coffee shop in stead of driving
-do some gardening
-incorporate with another activity like nature photography

There's TON's of things you can do just be creative!

I would like to add Disc Golf to that list. It is a great outdoor sport that is very relaxing and the best part is that the whole family can play.

I, too, hate exercising. However, due to middle age spread and a stint with depression, I've just sucked it up and started doing it. I'm finding that committing to it and setting it up as part of my day is assisting me. When I drop my daughter off to school, I'm go straight to the part and power walk or run.

If I don't feel like doing it, I just do a shorter and slower walk, but I don't give myself the time off unless I'm sick.

I think more weight lifting is required as well as cardio almost every day. A modified macrobiotic diet is good: veggies, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains (like brown rice); occasionally dairy. I am 71 and have done the above for years; it works.

Give thanks is the hardest and easiest.

I use a great iPad Diet APP that also logs my exercise. Most American doctors think exercise has to be running or sweaty work outs. That kind of exercise is for the young, the single and IMPOSSIBLE if you are a parent and/or have to do 2 jobs to pay for all the bills and education of your kids.

Did you know that working at the computer burns over 100 Calories hourly? Did you know that House Cleaning: dusting your apartment, light cleaning of floors and surfaces burns up around 191 calories an hour?
Tthe British Medical Association has in the past found that dragging a vacuum cleaner up and down one story home is actual exercise worthy of a Sports Club.

You burn 1550 calories just staying in bed for the whole day and doing nothing;)

Shopping, reading a book, jumping up from you easy recliner while watching football on Cable, ALL burns up calories.

I mention this because the exercise part is written by and for A type individuals who insist you must run, go to an expensive sports club. YES YOU NEED to sweat for the heart: carry your own groceries home. Cleaning can be hard work. WE NEED to move!

The trick is also NOT eating TOO much. Active mind? No need to learn French or Chess, try predicting the end of a movie or book. Smiling burns calories! An active MIND leads to an Active LIFE.

As we age, we find that we have less muscle. We have to work harder to maintain lean muscle mass and prevent the increase of body fat %. In the article, he states that our bodies are 60-70% water. However, many older persons with less lean muscle often are only 45-50% water because their fat levels are high.

Animals of all types store toxins in their fat cells until the liver or kidneys can flush them from the system. When we eat animals fats from CAFO raised animals, we know that they already have excess toxins and weight gaining chemicals in fat. Even fatty fish store their toxins like mercury in fat cells.

The body is amazingly resilient. If we give the kidneys and liver the opportunity/time , it can flush most bad chemicals and even begin the process of re-balancing our hormones. The listed suggestion to consume fewer calories at a meal is critical. This is especially true for the dinner meal after 5:00 PM.

I would even suggest that we experiment with a liquid fast for a 24 hour period about once a week. Drink plenty of fresh water as suggested but also allow your body to experience raw vegetable and fruit juices of all types. I can often go several hours with just fresh apple juice, a small slice of ginger, and great beet juice in small amounts. The beet juice does wonders for aiding your kidneys and liver with their work.

Fasting once per week doesn't sound like a very good idea to me. If I go without one meal, I get weak. Fasting can lead to bad eating habits. Stay with good eating habits, eat organic whenever possible, stay hydrated, and exercise regularly. Unless you are under close doctor supervision, don't fast.

A very fine and useful compilation Dr. . May i add this: intense cardiovascular activity- running, swimming , biking, fast walking, rowing, basketball etc. is much more conducive to generating energy,truew stamina and vitality than wieght training. of course, light weight work in later age is improtant, but it is the advanced caqdiovascular fitness at any age post -40 that is the "trickle of youth", not big muscles.
