You may think that it's a one-time exposure to chemicals that's the big risk, but daily use of household items can result in low doses of chronic exposure. Cleaners, plastic containers, and so many items available cheaply at the dollar store can be accompanied by harmful chemicals. Find out what's safe to purchase at a deep discount, and what's best avoided.

Avoid discounted household cleaners which are made with a toxic soup of chemicals. Instead, buy all-natural cleaning agents, such as vinegar, baking soda, corn starch and microfiber clothes. Tip: Dampen the microfiber clothes before wiping down furniture and knick-knacks — that way, you can avoid using harsh chemicals and also reduce dust from flying around.

It's certain that microwaving certain kinds of plastic can be toxic. Instead, purchase glass storage containers — mason jars are a particularly pretty way to store food.

Continue to avoid plastics in the kitchen section. Instead: Go for stainless-steel products, including utensils, pots, spatulas, pet bowls, travel coffee mugs, and more. Studies show that stainless steel is less likely to leach chemical components into food and water.
