Science and Spirit Converge in the Now (Video)

Posted: 05/29/11 09:00 AM ET

A growing understanding of our universe reveals two remarkable dynamics at work that together intensify and expand our feeling for the spiritual nature of existence. The first dynamic is the universe story: A grand narrative that portrays humanity as descendants of a vast, creative lineage of life that stretches over nearly 14 billion years. The second dynamic is the universe emerging as a fresh creation at every moment.

While the universe story provides a stunning narrative of the "horizontal" unfolding across time, the insight of an emerging universe adds the "vertical" dimension of the universe continuously arising in time. The vertical dynamic of continuous creation slices through all that exists and reveals everything as a single orchestration happening all at once. At every moment, we are a part of this grand unity of creation.

The unfolding of the universe through time demonstrates an amazingly powerful and patient process at work. The continuous creation of the cosmos in time reveals another, stunningly powerful dynamic. When we put these two extraordinary processes together at an intersection called "now," it reveals how we simultaneously exist in a place of both creative freedom and profound communion. Being and becoming converge into an experience beyond words -- and we recognize that we already live in the realm of the sacred.

Our awakening to a new understanding of the universe in both its horizontal and its vertical aspects represents a stunning re-imagining of where we are as a species. Realizing that we live at the intersection of both the horizontal unfolding of the universe and the vertical arising of the universe presents a view of existence that reaches beyond any particular nation, region, or ethnic group. We are bio-cosmic beings who are waking up to the fact that we live in an ever-emergent universe and our evolutionary task is to grow into the bigness of who we are, both personally and collectively. This vision of the human journey is big enough to honor the diversity of our past and to act as a beacon for our collective future.

Although the idea of an ever-emergent universe has ancient roots in human experience, it is also radically new as the frontiers of modern science offer a growing recognition of how dynamic the universe truly is. The universe is not static, sitting quietly in empty space; instead, the totality of the universe is everywhere in motion and being regenerated moment by moment -- a process requiring the flow-through of a stupendous amount of energy. In the words of cosmologist Brian Swimme, "The universe emerges out of an all-nourishing abyss not only fourteen billion years ago but in every moment." Moment by moment, the universe emerges as a single orchestration -- a uni-verse or single verse of manifestation. Because nothing is left out of the regeneration of the universe, we are participants in a cosmic scale process whether we are conscious of it or not.

This insight is not restricted to science. Based upon decades of research described in my book "The Living Universe," harvesting the wisdom of human experience is like watching a picture gradually come into focus and seeing an extraordinary image of the universe emerging before our eyes. Within each major tradition -- Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian, Indigenous, and more -- we can find remarkably similar descriptions of the universe and the life force that sustains it: Christians affirm that God is not separate from this world but continuously creates it anew, so that we live, move, and have our being in God. Muslims declare that the entire universe is continually coming into being, and that each moment is a new "occasion" for Allah to create the universe. Hindus proclaim that the entire universe is a single body that is being continually danced into creation by a divine Life force or Brahman. Buddhists state that the entire universe arises freshly at every moment in an unceasing flow of interdependent, co-arising where everything depends upon everything else. Taoists state that the Tao is the "Mother of the Universe," the inexhaustible source from which all things rise and fall without ceasing. Confucians view our universe as a unified and interpenetrating whole that is sustained and nourished by the vitality of the life force or ch'i. Indigenous peoples declare that an animating wind or life force blows through all things in the world and there is aliveness and sacred power everywhere. And many Western thinkers portray the universe as a single, living creature continually regenerating itself as it evolves toward higher levels of complexity and consciousness. Beneath the differences in language, a common reality is being described -- our life is part of a larger life that is being continuously renewed. The universe inhabits us as much as we inhabit the universe.

The unity of existence is not an experience to be created; rather, it is an always-manifesting condition waiting to be appreciated and welcomed into awareness. The "power of now" derives from the entire universe arising at every moment as an extremely precise flow. When we are in the now, we are "reality surfing" -- riding the wave of continuous creation. Each moment is a fresh formation of the universe, emerging seamlessly and flawlessly. It is the doubly powerful nature of life at the intersection of emergence and evolution that gives such intensity and span of meaning to existence, and awakens naturally a spiritual appreciation for all of life.

Sw. Ragananthananda called religion "the philosophy of life"-- a scientific quest for truth. When the same spirit of scientific temper &inquiry that we employ to investigate the mysteries of the material world --if directed inward-- it becomes religion or spirituality. Ethnic religion is different than the science of religion which is the science of human growth& fulfillment.

Duane, thanks as always for this post and your overall contribution to the awakened consciousness that is making Its presence known throughout this part of our Living Universe. I am always inspired by your work because your deep understanding pours forth through your words and touches the soul! It is your passion and awakening that touches the heart through the various media you choose to express yourself. Very refreshing and inspiring!

It is with little doubt that I will offer that Science and Religion do converge in universal understanding. Spirit, remains but one manifest of this. The essence of being or becoming, the fruitful common ground of introspection, observation, contemplation and manifestation.

To KNOW, is to seek the simplicity within chaos, the sublime within the torments of confusion or the perfect within the imperfect.

A river flows with undulations, tumult, currants and eddies not clearly visible to a casual observer, but onward it flows; nonetheless. A child can attest to these facts.

Water is what we are told, was ever present, in the beginning, to be gathered and all creation to be the result. The whole of the periodic table, but permutations of this eons old story. Why then have we not turned to this substance in seeking answers to our Modern-Day dilemmas? Not unlike the allegory of the burning bush, all energies to emanate from one common source, unconsumed and everlasting and fully rejuvenating in its’ most-full nature. Yes, even before illumination, there was water, or so we are told.

Hydrogen and Oxygen, combined with an everywhere, everything force, imparted by electricity to yield up any manner of manifest energies we might choose. Water, if you will, a carrier of this force.

Now we make wars over a corruption of these most basic of properties of water, Hydrocarbons.

Can it all be that simple?

YES!,,,,, And it IS!

All the best

You know, it's interesting how articles that spark battles between ideological adversaries -- theist/atheist, for instance -- get thousands of comments, while articles like this one, that transcend ideology, that are forward-looking, that are creative -- get 22.

It's a long road, kids.

Duane, thanks so much for posting this fundamental question to everyone, for it is key to our underlying assumptions about the reality in which we live and work.

You are right, this is a key assumption John. If we all saw ourselves as part of a unified whole that is continuously blossoming into new expressions of itself, then we would be inclined to participate life in a new way: more as a process of learning and celebration than as competition and acquisition.

Duane, thank you for your thoughtful and clear "tour" of the vertical and horizontal lines of the universal arising. I wonder, are you indicating that the listed traditions are differing expressions of the same Mystery, or are you suggesting a synthesis that leads to a uniquely modern insight that suggests a universal philosophy that offers a more sane basis for life, both private and social, than the corrosive outdated competitive consumerism and adventurism that governs modern life today? What would you say that basis for life is, and how would we begin to live it? Love your work!

Thanks for the penetrating questions Nathan. I would suggest both are paradoxically true: All of the world's wisdom traditions point to the co-arising of the universe, or the insight that the universe is being regenerated in its totality at every moment. However, the shared nature of this foundational insight is often overlooked and unrecognized, so the opportunity for a uniquely modern synthesis is a real possibility. If the human community can recognize this as a shared understanding that already exists (although variously described), a universal approach to life can emerge; namely, we are all engaged in the common task of learning to live in a living universe. How this insight provides the basis for a healthier and happier approach to life is described in an earlier blog; see: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/duane-elgin/living-universe_b_862220.html

Beautifully expressed, Duane - love thinking about the verticality of the living universe, the power of now and seeing us as the bio-cosmic beings that we are - so very rich!

Thanks Nader. Yes, the "power of now" emerges directly from the understanding that the universe is being regenerated or is "co-arising" in its totality at every moment. Because we are an integral part of that cosmic process, we are by our very nature "bio-cosmic beings."

And, we could add, "co-dying" in its totality at every moment! Rising and falling.

Was about to say that the universe "flickers," which would have wrongly implied that existence and non-existence are separate conditions, sequentially toggling back and forth in time.

"Now" is only now. So there IS no time and no toggling. Existence and non-existence are two aspects of one movement. Not separate.

To borrow a '60s phrase, it's a "Happening"!

I fully agree with this beautiful vision of the cosmos and our place in it.

After a decade of research, I published "The Science of Oneness: A worldview for the twenty-first century" which presents a scientifically valid vision of reality that is conscious, creative, loving and purposeful. It integrates insights from many scientific disciplines with ancient spiritual traditions to challenge us all to help guide the evolution of humanity and the Earth in positive directions.

For a summary of this in-depth look at what modern science has to say, see http://www.humansolutionsnow.com/science-and-spirituality/about-the-science-of-oneness/

Very excellent. The idea that 14 billion years ago a ball of matter exploded and the universe evolved from that point in time onward, or the idea that God created the universe six thousand years ago, each idea postulates a begining and a movement in time. Human perception of time is a result of the limitations of the physical perceptive mechanisms. Percieved one moment after the next, time is considered a fundamental aspect of reality. In reality, all time exists at once. The infinite now, if you will, or the spacious present. The past exists now, the present exists now, and the future exists now. And not just one past, present, and future, but infinite "timelines" exist simultaneously. If you exist now, you exist period. What Is, Is, always was, and always will be. There is no begining and there is no end. Just the infinite creative play of the universe. Do you want to play? See it in your mind's eye and know that it will be and you will bring it to the playground. Love, happiness, health, wealth, and wisdom. These things are within our grasp when we realize that we are one with the creative universe, that God is within all things. We are learning how to handle creative energy. Right here. The 3D drama, that Is. Good article. The eternally emerging universe. I can dig it. :)

Hi Kristin, :) no, that was not a typo. I did mean to say "spacious present". It is meant to describe a "now" that includes many pasts, presents, and futures. I cannot take credit for coming up with that description. The greatest influence on my thinking, understanding, and world view comes from reading the books and other information produced by author/psychic investigator Jane Roberts who channeled Seth. Seth described himself as an energy personality essence. The first book, "Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul" transformed my world view and the next book, "The Nature of Personal Reality" was tremendously helpful to me personally. I highly recommend both. The Jane Roberts/Seth combination produced alot of high quality information. It was thirty years ago that I first read Seth Speaks. That definitely put me on a path. Thanks for saying hi. ;)

PS: Duane, my wife just finished this artist's statement for her new work. Reading your piece and hers side by side this evening was rather amazing. She writes:

"I am working on a new series called the Seed Sounds.

The root of this work goes back to when I was a little girl of four or five, and had my first spiritual awakening in my grandmother's garden. The rich warm red earth between my toes, the brilliant sunlight, the thick buttery Mississippi breeze, the sound of the birds and insects and the wind in the mulberry trees brought my little girl self into a new kind of self-awareness, in which the flowers, the earth, the universe and I were all one. There was no separation. That awareness has stayed with me and sustained me my whole life. As an artist and a teacher, I am always returning to that primordial experience and allowing it to unfold in new ways through my visual work, and in my work with individuals and community. In the Seed Sound pieces I’m returning in an abstract and formal way, painting the vibration I feel emanating from the sacred heart of the universe, the sound of continuous creation."

Duane, do you have a reference for Brian's quote "The universe emerges out of an all-nourishing abyss not only fourteen billion years ago but in every moment"?

Also, are you familiar with Izutsu's "Creation and the Timeless Order of Things: Essays in Islamic Mystical Philosophy"? If not, I think you'd find it highly relevant to your work:

The quote from Brian Swimme comes from his book, "The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos," New York: Orbis Books, 1996, p. 100.

I am not familiar with Izutsu's book and will look for it. Thanks for the reference.

Thanks, Duane. I have several of Swimme's books but not that one.

Izutsu's book has been so influential on me—he was such a phenomenal guy. And the sufi philosophers he was concerned with in this work were doing some of the deepest work imaginable. Every one of the seven essays in the book is a gem, but the three that leap to mind on reading your post here are:

"An Analysis of wahdat al-wujud (ie, the oneness of existence)"

"Creation and the Timeless Order of things: A Study in the Mystical Philosophy of 'Ayn al-Qudat al-Hamadani"

"The Concept of Perpetual Creation in Islamic Mysticism and Zen Buddhism"

Thanks for all your great work. I've got "The Living Universe" in my Amazon cart.

true. there is no past, present or future. that is the mind trying to divide, separte and conceptualize. so here's one more. there is only infinity.

while it is all ultimately timeless, we get to experience the illusion of time much like how we pay to see a movie. all the drama and thrill is in being swept away by the show on the screen. the tao is all pervading, and we are priviliged to give it conciousness, to get a seat on the bus that will never ever land. this is the reward for all the suffering we chose to experience, for acting in this drama called life on earth. now it is time for the actor to take her final curtain call. it is always time for this.

Before Einstein, time was thought of linearly, like the flight of an arrow. After Einstein, time has occasionally been thought of as a stream, with eddies and currents flowing at different speeds and directions. and maybe even the possibility of moving against the current.
