Texas officials postponed high school athletic competitions until May 11 as a precaution against swine flu as Gov. Rick Perry and state health officials urged...
UPDATE 4/27: The Dallas Morning News has a long report on a similar theme: despite his anti-Washington rhetoric, Gov. Rick Perry has raised major amounts...
The Tenth Amendment resolutions have been promoted by the Council of Conservative Citizens, the racist successor organization to the White Citizens' Councils of the 1950s.
Governor Rick Perry of Texas brought up the specter of Secession recently and upon polling, a fair amount of Texans and other Americans seem to think Texas seceding from the US would be a good idea.
Nobody wants to overreact, but nobody wants to be caught unprepared. Responsible members of the media are faced with the difficult task of properly informing without needlessly alarming the public.
A misplaced priority on profits over human health in the context of a globalized world led to this epidemic and the looming possibility that it will now become the world's latest pandemic.
The rhetoric coming from the current governor of Texas is essentially the same as delivered by a man who led his tiny militia to the mountains of West Texas and bought a run-down trailer to establish a Republic of Texas Embassy.
Our public health system has been under-funded for decades and there are many existing gaps that leave us vulnerable, particularly if the swine flu becomes more severe and lethal.
When Gov. Perry of Texas, or the Palins of Alaska associate themselves with something as crazy sounding as secession, don't be surprised: it really is what they believe.
A deadly new influenza virus has managed to jump from pigs to people in a previously unseen mutated form that can readily spread among humans. How could this happen? There are several plausible explanations.
Be well, and try not to panic. The Swine Flu can be a very serious infection, but there are few cases in the US and all of the people infected have recovered or are recovering. Stay safe by taking precautions.
We do not yet know the lethality of this particular strain or mix of animal and human viruses, but it appears at first glance less deadly than the "bird flu."
While I think it's unlikely that the current outbreak of swine flu will reach pandemic proportions, it's worth looking at what a pandemic would be like in economic terms, and what individuals can do to prepare for one.
As the drama of "tea parties" unfolds, some things remain certain. Some Americans just don't like to pay taxes. No matter how the taxes are used, even the word "taxes" is an anathema to some.
The most transformative health care overhauls that succeeded in the last century employed the same strategy: build on what we've got and let the changes happen organically.
In the weeks ahead, there will be plenty of hysteria (and misinformation) about the swine flu. If you can, try to focus on what you can control: Your hygiene, your contact with others, and your health.
You know what? Leave! Reactionary, white supremacists have been yelling this line to minorities forever: "If you don't like this country, leave." Time to flip the script.
We do know that Mexican pigs with swine flu are being destroyed. And we know that Mexican lawmakers think that confined animal feeding operations are making people sick.

I'm playing hookie today from church HP thanks for the laughter. This little incident with Rick reminded me of what our wise President said to the Repurgs about calling for the release of the so call memo with evidence that Torture saved U.S. lives, "be careful what you wish for". You cannot secede one week and beg for assistance from the government with Swine flu. This is a double standard and hypocrisy especially after refusing TARP funds.

I thought Ipso Facto was the owner of the pizza place where the Republicans held their latest confab. (He's De Facto's brother.)
