Steele's Resignation Would Be a Catastrophe for Obama

What's Your Reaction:

If Michael Steele did what the pack of GOP conservatives are screaming for, namely tender his resignation as Republican National Committee chair, it would be a catastrophe for President Obama and the Democrats. The gaffe-prone Steele has bungled money and staff, regularly mugs and grandstands on network talk shows, brags about being hip, a street guy, and even complains that he, as President Obama, is also subject to a racial double standard. He has more detractors than any GOP leader this side of W. Bush, and that includes legions of Republican leaders.

For now though the RNC still needs Steele for the very reason he was plucked for the lead role in the first place. In the wake of Obama's smash White House win, he was the best hope to prevent a battered, beaten, and demoralized GOP had from being shoved to the netherworld of national politics. The GOP is still widely sneered at and dismissed as an insular party of unreconstructed bigots, Deep South, rural and, non-college educated blue collar whites. Steele gives the party an image sheen that is anything but white, rural and Deep South.

Steele has had dual value to the GOP. In addition to being the moderate, freewheeling, shoot from the lip, non-traditional Republican, that excites many and give the party a different look and feel, he's comfortable at tea party rallies, and aggressively courts tea party leaders. GOP mainstream leaders may shrink in red faced embarrassment at Steele (and in a poll by the National Journal earlier this year seventy percent want him out), the RNC sex club fiasco, its high living, jet-setting ways, and feign even more embarrassment at the borderline racial antics and slurs, digs from some tea baggers, and ultra conservatives. But they know that the GOP would fall flat on its face without them. Their passionate belief in God, country and patriotism, little to no government, passionate defense of personal freedoms, is the political oil that has fueled the GOP's machine for four decades, and assured the White House for Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. and W. Bush.

But looking ahead that may not mean much in the run-up to the 2012 presidential elections. Outside of Palin, Steele is the most polarizing Republican since Lincoln. This makes him the perfect distraction, foil, and ultimately, perfect perverse Obama ally. Steele is the butt of SNL laugh lines, giddily mocked and ridiculed by Democrats and the pundits, groaned at by the GOP regulars long before his initial knock against the Afghan war. Most agree that he's not fit to head the RNC. But this only makes him even more bizarrely appealing.

Steele on the loose in the run-up to the 2012 presidential elections would potentially render invaluable aid to Obama. He would confuse, rile up, and split Republicans. That could translate out into millions of disgruntled, frustrated voters who would be so disgusted with the party that they would be sorely tempted to stay at home. This would be tantamount to a vote for Obama.

A mesmerized media, titillated public, and legions of Steele loathers, have made him the butt of derision and the talk of the land. That talk is just fine for Obama. But this dream scenario for the Democrats is likely to be just that a dream. If Steele weathers the current storm, and he probably will, almost certainly he will be toast in January. That's when his tenure as RNC chair ends. For now the Democrats love every minute of Steele and the GOP's arm wrestle, and they should. Enjoy it while it lasts, because it won't.

What's wrong with being a high school grad who is a blue collar worker, aren't those the people who actually work for a living? I think what is wrong with white people they are becoming a little elitist, all into education and not putting a big priority into having families, or if they do, putting them into day care. Our country is being destroyed by those kinds of people, because they certainly aren't the salt of the earth that made our country great, built it, or defended it, so don't put down those people who just graduated from high school and work for what they get, and don't make money talking a bunch of bull at some staff meeting. Our values are all screwed up and that's what's bringing this country down. Don't put down those blue collar workers.

Absolutely hilarious how 'everything' can be manipulated/spun into ' Obama's Next Big Problem '....even the pathetic acts of the GOP. Hey Earl....ever thought that Steele resigning could be a catastrophe for the GOP ? But that would make too much common sense. Before Nov. expecting an article from you 'how Steele's not stepping down spells the end for The President ' ! Comical.....and Pathetic !

I smiled all the way through this proverbial fly-on-the-wall article. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, possesses a wonderful humor as he surgically cut's open "the lemon" of the, RNC, and in doing so exposes their unwillingness or inability to make lemonade.

Yeah. To perfect lemonade, one must provide sweetener. But that would raise the deficit. Wait, what were you talking about?

Outside of Palin, Steele is the most polarizing Republican since Lincoln.

I guess I just don't understand what a big FN deal Michael Steele is. Wow

Reconstruction, Segregation. That was a pretty polarizing. Or what about WWI? that was pretty polarizing. Or what about the Depression? That was pretty polarizing.

Yeah getting rid of him sounds like it will unleash a united force of Republicans upon us. The moderates, the clubhouse popped collar B-school brats, the logcabin conservatives, the Tea Party, the Ron Paultards, the religious conservatives will all harmonize once he's gone.

Be afraid!

A "catastrophe" for Obama........really????
Michael Steele's resignation hurting Obama is like Sarah Palin retiring from public spotlight would affect our relationship with Russia.

I'd say that Steele's gaffes are small potatoes compared to Borhner's and Barton's. Really, Republican leaders seem to compete for who can offend the most voters. Apologize to BP for 'extortion?' Wall Street reform, watered down, is like atom bombing an ant?

The GOP is a passionate believer in little or no government and personal freedoms? That's a good one.

For them, but not other people. If they were for personal freedom they would support gay marriage.

They believe in big government with military contractors and corruption and corporate irresponsibilty.

Steele has no Honor. Therefore, he will NOT resign. And THAT is a 'crying' shame for the Republican party, as they bought this upon their selves by electing that LOSER in the first place!

I tend to think Steele's effect isn't that widespread. He's not running for office, and money is being donated around the RNC, so it and he are not all that important. As a foil for Obama, again, I think this misses the point. The President has to stand on his merits. Merely pointing at Steele as a way of summing up GOPer stupidity isn't going to energize Democrats who have been unhappy with the President and his priorities anymore than GOPers will stay home in 2010 because of Steele. Whether he stays or goes, politics goes on.

A little off the mark here.

"Outside of Palin, Steele is the most polarizing Republican since Lincoln"
Did you forget Bush43, Nixon, Reagan?

"Steele on the loose in the run-up to the 2012 presidential elections would potentially render invaluable aid to Obama. He would confuse, rile up, and split Republicans."

Obama is the president. Steele is not even an elected official. Were he not black, he would be more irrelevent than he already is. The GOP message machine is WAY too disciplined to let this guy get so out of line it would rise to the level of politically abetting a sitting president.

Why do you think Rove and Gillespie have created a parallel RNC to raise money? Do you think Dems, similarly situated with a fool as the head of committee, would think that far in advance?

Dems should forget about Steele and be very, very, very afraid about the Reid/Angle race in NV. If a teabager defeats the sitting majority leader, it will partially vindicate Steele's ties to the teabagers (in contrast to Armey's admonishion for Republicans to shun them,) and render the Dems politically impotent and irrelevent for our lifetime regardless of how many seats they controil because it will show they not only cannot govern, they cannot win.

Smart take on the matter.
03:08 PM on 07/05/2010
Wow, passing health care, fin reg, and implementing many policy changes is not governing. I guess lying about war and landing on aircraft is the way to govern. I have a lot of issues with Obama's presidency but he is governing and he did win the most shocking election in my lifetime.

Many Repub and Dem senate leaders have lost and neither party was out.
"for our lifetime regardless of how many seats they control because it will show they not only cannot govern, they cannot win."

This is an insane comment, Puller, this is not a smart take on the matter. Dennis Hastert (the last senate majority leader) was a Republican of the worst government in history (which may sound like Hyperbole) but that is what many historians are saying. Now one election cycle later, the republicans are looking to make gains again. History has shown there are cycles.

If a bad senate leader is beaten by an idiotic tea-bagger this will not be the end of Dems ruling in our life time, and probably will not rule out Dems for this entire decade.

As Dem sympathizer I hope there is new leadership (whether it be it the minority or majority), I will bet that if Angle wins she will never ever be the Senate majority leader.

This says nothing about how Democrats govern.

A lot can happen between now and November but if Angle keeps spouting the stuff she is saying, she is going to alienate every sector of the republican base in NV except the wing nuts.

One thing you really need to do in politics is keep your statements pretty vague so that it doesn't offend any specific group. The more divisive an issue the more you need to skirt the specifics. I realize it sounds rather cynical but it is how it has been done for a long time and it gets people elected.

Steele is so irrelevant, in all probability, his resignation or dismissal would have no impact whatsoever. The only way it could matter is if the GOP had some rock star genius that was willing to take his place and they clearly don't. All that would happen if Steele resigned is the GOP would put some other near-do-well in his place who spouted all sorts of talking points about american exceptionalism while displaying the type of mediocrity that comes from 50 years of staunch party cronyism.
01:35 PM on 07/05/2010
The only way Steele's 'ouster' could have any 'impact', were if a TRUE CONSERVATIVE were to be his 'replacement'. Let's say someone like 'Alan Keyes'.
10:53 AM on 07/05/2010
The Deep South, unreconstructed bigots you use as the image of the republican party see Mr. Steele as a figurehead and a token. His ability to lead them astray and confuse the party is nullified by his inability to lead them at all. Mr. Steele provides the image of an incompetent black man. If the President were the only black man at center stage of American national politics today, the black-man-in-office archetype would be all about charisma and confidence. With Mr. Steele it isn't. I don't imagine that a party as skilled at imagery and subliminal messaging as the GOP did this on accident. In short, Mr. Steel isn't a ploy to remove the image of the GOP as a haven for bigots. He's actually there to reinforce it.
