Robert Novak speaks!
"Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has informed my attorneys that, after two and one-half years, his investigation of the CIA leak case concerning matters directly relating to me has been concluded. That frees me to reveal my role in the federal inquiry that, at the request of Fitzgerald, I have kept secret."
After all this time, what does Robert Novak have to share?
- He did not take the Fifth.
- He never made a plea bargain.
- He was never targeted for prosecution.
- Fitzgerald knew who his sources were — independently of him.
- Fitz had obtained waivers from "every official who might have given me information about Wilson's wife." This skeeved Novak out, not unlike Judith Miller. Blanket waivers, bah, say they.
- But Fitz knew his sources - and showed to Novak's lawyer's office with only two waivers - the two that mattered. One was from Karl Rove. The other was from Novak's "Primary Source." Fitz also had a waiver from Bill Harlow, the CIA public information officer who confirmed Valerie Plame Wilson's identity.
- Novak remembers his conversation with Rove differently than Rove; neglects to share how.
- Novak has NOT revealed his Primary Source.
- The circumstances of the disclosure: "Joe Wilson's wife's role in instituting her husband's mission was revealed to me in the middle of a long interview with an official who I have previously said was not a political gunslinger. After the federal investigation was announced, he told me through a third party that the disclosure was inadvertent on his part."
- Novak learned Valerie Plame's name from Joe Wilson's entry in "Who's Who in America."
- He reported the story and the rest, as they say, is history.
