In a weird sort of irony, EsteƩ Lauder has edited a video featuring comedienne Sandra Bernhard shilling for MAC's new "Plushglass" lip line because of an anti-Republican comment. In the video, called "Mouthing Off," Bernhard free-associates about her outspoken, passion-fueled lips, saying "If I had thin lips I could never express myself the way I'm able to express myself," and "Can you really handle it? I mean, can you really handle these lips?" Apparently, MAC parent EsteƩ Lauder could not, and edited out the part where Bernhard spoke of an "intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped b*tch." The video, first posted on August 3rd, was linked yesterday on the Drudge Report, and the company was inundated by angry phone calls.
FishbowlNY spoke with a MAC spokeswoman, who said that "The video has been getting a lot of attention, which is what we wanted" and said it's had 187,000 views. To be honest, the video could stand to have had a bit more editing, actually; it runs long and Bernhard really does seem to be speaking (and sometimes stammering) off the top of her head. The website copy invites viewers to "Be like Sandra: provocative, controversial...a real power-mouth!" (but not, presumably, to be outspoken about her views on the lips of Republican women).
