Last week we raised an eyebrow at the conflicting reports from "inside sources" at SNL which claimed that any/either of Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz, Will Forte and/or Kenan Thompson were on the chopping block, in varying combinations. Today, we throw our hat in with our own source: Horatio Sanz himself, who told the audience at last night's "ASSSSCAT" show at the Upright Citizen's Brigade that he would be staying at SNL for the coming season. (To be specific, our source was someone in that audience, who passed on Sanz's announcement. But it's a small stage there at the UCB and Sanz is hard to miss, so we're pretty sure we're right.)
The rumor and speculation surrounding the SNL cast cuts began last Tuesday with an article in the New York Post by Don Kaplan, which claimed that four staffers had already been told that they were getting the ax, and cited Lorne Michaels talking about the necessities of belt-tightening. NYC comedy website The Apiary scoffed at what it said was "a bogus and poorly fact-checked article" (it must have been bad; the site, a nexus for all NYC-related comedy news, elected not to link it). That didn't seem to faze Kaplan, who followed up his original article with another noting that Sanz and Parnell "may" be the ones ousted and that Maya Rudolph was considering leaving the show (Kaplan cites no source for these rumors).
SNL staffers return to work from hiatus tomorrow so confirmation one way or another should come soon. Or at least a few more rumors from trusty insiders.
