Texas Monthly's January issue brands Veep Dick Cheney their "Bum Steer of the Year" in a nod both to poor Harry Whittington and the National Lampoon's famous and oft-imitated cover. Riffing on Esquire's classic "Dubious Achievement Awards," Texas Monthly said the Veep earned the top spot by being "a real blast to go hunting with":
"He may be number two in the White House, but to us he'll always be number one with a bullet. Or a pellet. Come out from that undisclosed location, Dick Cheney. You're our Bum Steer of the Year."
See the rest of the Bum Steer awards here (they're so Texan!); also of interest to media wonks will no doubt be editor Evan Smith's editor's letter ruminating on classic magazine covers and why they are ripe for the riffing (read: ripe for the ripping). The issue's at the printer as we write so until it comes out next week you'll have to content yourself with the current version, which as it happens offers a highly useful cover on "The 63 Tacos You Must Eat Before You Die," riffing pointedly on GQ's burger-encomium of the same name. Tacos, as everyone knows, are delicious. Especially peppered!
