Eat The Press

It's over — we hope — and Donald Trump has lost: Barbara Walters has sided with Rosie O'Donnell, and, in the words of Baba Wawa, they're "moving on."

This morning's episode of "The View" addressed yesterday's swirling rumors of a knock-down drag-out fight between Rosie and Barbara in the makeup room, where, according to yesterday's Page Six, Rosie lashed out at Barbara for not defending her, calling her a "[bleeping] liar." It also addressed Trumps totally classy letter to Rosie, sent yesterday and circulated widely, claiming that Barbara had trashed talked her co-host to the Donald, saying things like "working with [Rosie] is like living in hell," "Donald, never get into the mud with pigs" and, "don't worry, she won't be here long." Rosie and Barbara quickly put any question of tension/dissention to rest, however, in this morning's exchange:

Rosie: Well, he's at it again! (huge laugh from audience) How 'bout that, Barabara. You okay Barbara?
Baba: I'm okay, darling. You okay?
Rosie: I'm okay, too. We're both okay?
Baba: Okay. You know--
Elisabeth Hasselback (unsolicited): Okay.
Rosie: What can you say about that guy?
Baba (pause, for effect): That poor, pathetic man.

(Audience goes nuts. Baba and Rosie high-five.)

Walters then said that they were "moving on," though Rosie took one final potshot: "The man is obsessed with me, and I'm happy to say, his show tanked." (And it's true: The Apprentice finished third in the ratings this week, while the The View picks up more and more viewers with each round of the slugfest).

Trump, never one to leave the last word, answered back in a statement, saying that Barbara Walters had "lied with Star Jones and now she has chosen to lie again" and I'm-rubber-you're-glue-ing the "pathetic" comment back, calling her "a ("pathetic") puppet."

Here's something interesting though: Both Barbara Walters and Donald Trump have called each other liars. One of them is right, and one of them is guilty of defamation. Will one of them sue? Unlikely, since whatever passed between them (if anything) was obviously private, off the record, and not meant for public disclosure. That said, if either one of them decided to sue, the defense is pretty straightforward: Truth. Between Trump and Walters, only he's nutbar enough to sue; but at this point, the best thing for all involved — including us, God willing — is for the whole thing to slink away quietly. Since we're dealing with Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell, that is probably unlikely; but, dare to dream.

Backstory to the whole sordid mess here; The Donald's classy letterhead after the jump.
