...and here's the new cover. The mag officially hits newsstands on Feb. 13th — for extra luck! — and the toxic bachelor cover story will no doubt make it a perfect Valentine's Day gift. Radar 1 and 2 were always good at rounding up talent and they've done it again with the website, which has become pretty much a must-read since hitting the web in September 2006 (as ETP has previously opined and Gawker has agreed). They've done the same for this issue, tapping NPR's Kim Masters on Jim Carrey (she wrote previously for Radar about Tom Cruise), Leslie Savan on Hollywood and Obama (a story idea that's hit the 24-hour news cycle already, so we'll see how fresh it feels), and "How YouTube Ruined My Life" by senior writer John Cook who wrote the Radar 2.0 story on Jeff Zucker which caused many waves (and many official statements to be issued by NBC). Given the recent hoopla over SocialiteRank.com, the "Secret Life of Socialites" piece photographed by Jessica Craig-Martin is sure to be picked over (though how "secret" their lives are seems debatable given the aforementioned SocialiteRank); senior editor Tyler Gray wrote the "Gay Babies" piece , the probative value of which is yet to be assessed.) Plus there will be dispatches from the staff (including scoop-o-riffic scoopmeister Jeff Bercovici) so the book should be a fun read.
But, as always, the question is, will it be fun enough? Third time's a charm and we wish it the best of luck. But we said it once and it bears mentioning again: With things going so well for Radar online, why even bother with the magazine? Editor and founder and dreamer behind it all Maer Roshan has never been able to resist the glossy allure of print, but it's a tough world out there. So, here we reiterate: Time will tell if this is Maer Roshan's phoenix rising -- or his Achilles heel.
p.s. Funny: "Sometimes, Occasionally, Gawker Covers Radar."
