Reading With Friends: Welcome HuffPost's New Social Reader for Facebook

Posted: 11/28/11 09:00 AM ET

We're excited to team up with Facebook to bring you the latest in HuffPost Social News: The Huffington Post Social Reader.

The HuffPost Social Reader is a one-stop-shop on Facebook that lets you and your friends easily see and share all of your HuffPost activities, from your favorite stories to the slideshows you're voting on. It's an amazing real-time app that keeps you updated how your community of friends is enjoying HuffPost. And it all happens without ever having to leave Facebook.

The HuffPost Social Reader is the online version of the communal "living room," where sharing and commenting on stories is not only encouraged, but essential to the reading experience. Only now, instead of couches and a fireplace, we're making it possible to share from wherever you are -- and on whatever device. It's never been so easy to debate the news of the day or be the first person in your circle to discover and share those funny, viral articles, videos, songs, pix and more.

For the first time, friends will be able to see what you're doing on HuffPost and engage with you as you're doing it. And don't worry, if you're not comfortable sharing, you can continue experiencing HuffPost without your activities being broadcast on Facebook, since HuffPost Social Reader includes privacy controls that you can set to your own comfort level. After all, it's your living room.

We hope you'll have as much fun experiencing the HuffPost Social Reader as we did making it.

Check it out here.

Annoying and intrusive, this is yet another development that offers zero benefits to the user while allowing the provider a chance to farm more data. These newest facebook advances simply increase the noise-to-signal ratio. If I see something I actually want to share, I know how to do that. And if it turns out not to be shareworthy, I can make that call as well. As numerous commentators have noted, there is no additional benefit in new facebook apps that simply dump all of my using info in one un-differentiated lump.

Just as it's better that my mouth doesn't share every random thought in my head, it's better if my computer doesn't share every random tap of the cursor. I'm sorry if you truly had fun developing this, because I can think of many ways in which your time could have been better spent.

You can turn off sharing within the app if you are concerned about contributing to the noise on Facebook. However, we are tailoring a condensed experience of HuffPost for you with the idea that what you're sharing is actually more signal than not.

I am a very dedicated Facebook user myself, and so are a lot of my friends. I find that I get into real-time conversations with my friends about the content I'm reading, as I read it. For me, this is both a powerful and enjoyable experience.

If you are not a very active Facebook user this app may not be your 'cup of tea', but our goal is to give a HuffPost experience across the web and some people do spend a lot of their time online within Facebook.

Does this mean all these people are friends with (reading) benefits?

Just tell me how to make sure it's disabled...

At the end of the article it says check it out here, lick that. Then follow the promts and change it from public to custom and in custom change it to only me.

When I tried Facebook on a trial basis, I found my HuffPost web pages slowed a lot waiting for Facebook data to be accessed. I'm not sure why that was, or whether I was signed into Facebook at the time.

The more ties you have to Facebook, the less likely I'll use Facebook. I don't like slower access and I don't want that data accessible to Facebook. TMI

And it all happens without ever having to leave Facebook! Yeah! I used to be afraid to leave the house, now I'm afraid to leave Facebook. Not really I'm just looking forward to when Facebook becomes geocities.

Don't you think you know enough about your audience already without invading their reading habits in this way as well. I presume you're not going to be kind enough to redirect some of the newly earned advertising dollars this will learn you by selling your readers data back to the people who have created your wealth - the readers and writers.

You load this app, everyone will know what you are reading and when you are reading it. Forewarned is forearmed. No way will I ever use this.

There's a big button on the app that allows you to disable sharing.

You can actually disable sharing within the app. Once you do this, your read activity will not appear in your feed and will therefore not be visible to other Facebook users.
