The Problem of Leisure: Denver's Essential Concert Calendar For the week of February 10 - 16, 2010

As if on cue, the day before Valentine's day, there are going to be some broken hearts in Denver this week, as concertgoers have to choose between seeing St. Vincent at the Bluebird Theatre or the Editors/Antlers show at the Ogden Theatre. Fortunately indie up-and-comers Girls are the only do-not-miss show in town on Wednesday night.
Wed Feb 10: Girls

The ever fickle blogosphere has been abuzz about Girls since they released their excellent debut, simply called Album. It's not the fairer sex that has captured our collective attention this time, but rather the San Franciso-based duo that includes Christopher Owens and JR White. When they swing into town this week fans can expect to be entertained by the band's melody driven feel-good songs about feeling bad. Owens is one to watch, as he can vary the sound of his voice greatly. At times his remarkable pipes can bring to mind Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison or even the Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid.

Sat Feb 13: St. Vincent

Since the release of Actor last spring St. Vincent (a.k.a. the lovely Annie Clark) has been touring non-stop, including a stint opening for Andrew Bird, pausing only briefly to film a video at Women and Women First, Thunderant's imaginary feminist bookstore. Though she played the Bluebird Theater just last June, it's always a cause for celebration when Clark brings her honeyed voice, fearless guitar playing, and her mary janes to Denver. Openers Wildbirds and Peacedrums, a husband and wife art rock duo from Sweden, promise to start the evening off with percussive theatricality that is as bold as St. Vincent is thoughtful and measured.

Sat Feb 13: Editors/Antlers

Even though Birmingham England's Editors are technically headliners, we at Donnybrook are treating this show like a double bill. Despite the thrumming our Reverend gave the Editors latest release, In This Light and On This Evening, hopefully Tom Smith and company can still draw on their post-punk infused back catalog to keep fans happy. Even if they play the new record from front to back, it will still be worth braving the February chill to hear Brooklyn-based trio the Antlers promote Hospice, which was one of 2009's most literate and complex releases.
