The Problem of Leisure: Denver's Essential Concert Calendar April 8 - 14, 2010

There were so many great concerts on tap this week that it was tough to choose which were essential to best cultivate the hearts and minds of Donnybrook's eliterati. We've chosen to highlight can't miss performances from locals Achille Lauro, as well as The Big Pink, whom we welcome from across the pond, and These United States, who are from -- you guessed it -- the good ol' US of A.

Apr 10: Achille Lauro

What's better than having a love child with your videographer? Attending the LP release party for Achille Lauro's second full-length release, Indiscretions. Always surprising, Achille Lauro weaves catchy guitar hooks, upbeat horns, and computer sleight of hand together with a touch of humor. In less capable hands these disparate musical threads could easily be at odds, but the boys in Achille Lauro make them flow like sweet water. Apr 11: The Big Pink

If you were among the small number of sad unfortunates that missed British duo the Big Pink the last time they were in town, listen up. Robbe Furze and Milo Cordell offer you another opportunity to share in the rock goodness. Donnybrook's headmistress Angora Holly Polo deemed it "Probably the Best Concert Ever!" Life isn't always generous with second chances, so don't pass this one up. A Place to Bury Strangers brings their angular, edgy shoegaze to Denver in support of their sophomore release, Exploding Head. Unfortunately APTBS will be minus founding member Jono MOFO who recently left the band. Denver's own Boyhollow will start the night off with a DJ set, so don't be late.

Apr 12: These United States

There's only one place to be on Monday night, and that's at Gigbot HQ. Jesse Elliott and his crew of raggedy minstrels will make you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile, so slap down a ten spot, drink as much beer as your thirsty self can handle, and settle in to enjoy a live acoustic set of twangy alt-rock from These United States. The only thing that could make this night better is if it was taking place on the fourth of July. Kindly RSVP here, and don't forget to bring a treat for Gigbot's watchdog.
