The Problem of Leisure: Denver's Essential Concert Calendar for May 7, 2010

Extra! Extra! One night only! Why must two great shows be on the same night? Dear readers, how will you ever choose between Mike Marchant's Outer Space Party Unit at the Hi-Dive, or the turned out electro of Solid Gold and Cacheflow at the Larimer Lounge?

May 7: KVDU Live Compilation Mike Marchant's Outer Space Party Unit Vinyl Double Release Party

KVDU, the University of Denver's radio station, is set to release KVDU Live Vol. 1, a compilation CD of local bands including Everything Absent or Distorted, Widowers, the Knew, and Paper Bird, who were recorded live while performing at the station. Plus the CD will be available for free the night of the show. Mike Marchant, local musician extraordinaire, will headline the show to promote his latest solo release, Indulgent Space Rock Volume 2. He'll be backed by members of the Outer Space Party Unit. Our Father Guido has all the details, but know this: Marchant's only pressing 100 copies of his record, so if you want a copy it's best not to miss the show unless you want to fork over an entire week's salary to pick one up later on eBay. Fellow locals Blue Million Miles and Old Radio, both of whom appear on the KVDU comp, open the show.

May 7: Solid Gold and Cacheflowe

Up-and-coming trio Solid Gold hails from Minneapolis, but there is nothing Midwestern about this threesome's refined, dance floor-friendly sound. Plus, the band's Matt Locher designs shoes. Is there anything these guys can't do? They also had the good sense to team up with local digitizing maestro Justin Gitlin, better known to all as Cacheflowe. This guy takes garden variety IDM and puts it through a meat grinder. And though you may not recognize what he churns out, it sure is tasty. Cacheflowe isn't content just to be heard, he wants his work to be seen as well, so his live show features tricked-out visual effects that are sure to make you gyre and gymble in the wabe.
