America's Best Sandwiches -- Veganized!

Posted: 04/ 7/11 12:25 PM ET

Our recent article on America's Top 10 New Sandwiches caused quite a stir in the blogosphere, but no one was more riled up than a group of spunky vegan bloggers. Their de facto leader, Namely Marly, explains:

We read this article with great curiosity but it didn't take long until the curiosity faded and was replaced with something else. OK. We were grossed out. Particularly at one sandwich that referred to an ingredient called suckling pig. We hoped this was a reference to something other than the obvious, but it appears it is exactly as it sounds. Only one of the 10 sandwiches appeared to be vegetarian. We felt like a cross between Stan Laurel and Rodney Dangerfield, scratching our heads with a half whimper and half scowl thinking, "Why don't we vegans get any respect?"

So they decided to demand their own respect, teaming together to create tasty and healthy versions of each cholesterol-laden entry on the list of America's Top 10 New Sandwiches. Hence, America's Top 10 New Sandwiches -- Veganized. Here are all ten of 'em. Follow the links for recipes.

10. The Vegan Spuckie
1 of 11
We called this olive-carrot-mortadella goodness from Cutty's in Boston "the one sandwich that most successfully merges the old-school method of overdoing it on Italian meats with the new world of artisan, veggie-centric goodness." Drop the meat part and it's still drool-worthy. Trina Jaconi Biery of Your Vegan Mom made her own meat-free mortadella, featured here on a ciabatta roll topped with vegan mozzarella and a sweet carrot-olive salad.

Made a great vegan dinner last night. I bought a package of GARDEIN barbecue skewers at Fresh and Easy. They also sell it at Whole Foods. I tried it about a year ago when Fresh and Easy first opened. I uked it and I wasn’t very impressed. Last night Charlotte suggested I remove them from the skewers and pan cook it. I just bought a new Cuisinart over sized 12 inch pan that I fried it in with a short spray of olive oil spray with onions and mushrooms. I was delicious. I plan to make a great philly cheese steak sandwich with the fake beef as a base.
Breakfst this morning was a standard for us. Toast w/ Toffutti Fake Cream Cheese and a 1/4 of a honeydew melon w/ a little agave on it. Have you noticed that melons have sucked for quite a while?

The cashew cream encrusted veggie chicken patty sounds great. I've only recently discovered how much I love cashew cream as a salad dressing, adding a little lemon juice and tamari.

Without jumping into the meat-alternatives debate, I will say that my favorite vegan sandwich is a sweet-potato and avocado panini. Vegan, not pretending to be meat, and a delicious, surprising flavor and texture combination.

Wow! Some of these post are just...I dunno. So maybe some of this food is unhealthy processed crap. Maybe some of it IS better for you. Dont knock someone cause they want tofu that reminds them of bacon. Sounds crazy? You don't understand? Soooooo...... Live and let live man. Why judge because someone wants to eat differently than you if they aren't doing harm? I don't think this story is representing this stuff as health food anyway, haha.

Yeah, the fake meat is processed, higher protein than you need and not super healthy (tho healthier than the dead animal variety). It's fine once in a while. I agree, the focus of this article isn't health, but these recipes are probably good for people transitioning or just starting to explore foods. A lot of us old-hand vegans have left the fake meat behind for the most part :)

I am way past 40 years old and I weigh now as much as I did when I was 19. I feel good and I am really energetic and look young for my age (or so I hope). I eat meat that is Halal / Kosher. The thing is I eat everything in moderation. In the states people over indulge in eating meat and fat and sweets. When we go out to eat, my wife and I typically share one healthy entrée, one salad, one appetizer and sometimes one dessert - it's always perfectly enough. When we eat a bar of chocolate at home we share it with our kids. When we go out for ice cream we do not get it but we eat bites from the kids - this way also trains our kids not to eat much of it. If we go to a buffet style place, we eat a very large salad first then wait a few minutes and then eat something else - by then the salad has filled us up so we do not much of the other stuff. If we share a coke then we refrain from eating dessert (this goes for the kids too) and so on. So we get to enjoy everything and still remain healthy.

We had a small cafe for a couple of years and I would grill all of the meats and veges
We offered choice of vege or meaty
French dips
fajitas
soups and more
the Vege french dip was fantastic
grilled portabello, with garlic oil and basalmic vinegar on toasted baguette with horseradish mayo and hot vege au jus

They all sound delicious!
I find brussel sprouts are turning up more and more nowadays.
And they're not your grandma's boiled and over-cooked veggie anymore.

I love roasted brussel sprouts with just some olive oil, salt and pepper. So good and I really never thought I would like them! I say, if you don't like a vegetable prepared in one way, try another and it could become your new favorite food.

If they knock you down, bite 'em on the ankle.

Ha, ha, I love your name!

And brussels sprouts, of course!

I roast a lot of vegetables because it adds a dimension of flavor that steaming just can't offer. And that little bit of olive oil is so much better than slathering on lots of butter, for non-vegs, to get some flavor.

Incredible and very insightful speech about the ethics of not eating animals or their secretions:

off topic? check.
05:17 AM on 04/10/2011
No, not off topic. Mock meats discussed in Gary Yourofsky's speech - you can still have the taste of meat without contributing to the animal holocaust that is occuring every minute of the day. Various comments in this thread asked why eat mock meat when you can eat actual meat, well this speech explains the ethical reasons why some vegans who still like the taste of meat, choose to eat mock meat instead of the dead body of a terrorised and slaughtered animal.
06:21 AM on 04/10/2011
If you had bothered to listen to the speech before declaring it off topic you would have realised it has everything to do with it. The speaker explains that if you want the taste of meat and dairy without contributing to the daily terror and slaughter of innocent beings, then you can have it in the form of the many mock products that are available today. Many comments in this thread have asked why have pretend meat when you can have the real thing, well ethics and compassion are a major reason for many vegans, and this brilliant speech explains this.

I am just a bit nonplussed by the fact that the author of this food article seemed to have no idea what a suckling pig was.
