A 5-year-old girl found abandoned at a New York City bus terminal led police to a tragic discovery at her Connecticut home, CBS New York reports.

An officer found the girl exhausted and crying Monday morning at Port Authority in Manhattan. She said her father had told her to wait there, the station noted. She gave the officer her home address in Stamford, Connecticut.

Authorities there then found the girl’s mother dead from a suspected homicide, according to CBS. Stamford police are now looking for the father, Elmer Gomez Ruono, 32. Investigators interviewed the woman’s former boyfriend, but no arrest was made.

The child appeared unharmed, Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo told the New York Daily News. It was not clear if the girl witnessed her mother’s death.

The family had just moved to Stamford from Flemington, New Jersey, according to NBC New York.

Police say a domestic dispute erupted after guests left a small party at the apartment on Sunday, the station said.
