Work Hard, Travel Harder: Why Travel is the Only Luxury Worth Buying

I am of the mindset that travel is without a doubt one of the most fulfilling ways to spend your money. People often say “travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer,” but I disagree. As an entrepreneur I have to argue that stocks, bonds, real estate, etc., if you buy them, can make you richer. The thing about travel, though, is that it is one of those things you “buy” that will make you grow as a person. Travel for me is about the experiences, adventures, and exposure to different cultures, peoples and cuisines. All of this I find tremendously more valuable than any material thing.

The other huge benefit of travel is the opportunity to de-stress. To regroup, reboot, and refresh. We work hard 24/7 and without the chance to refuel and reward ourselves, we face burnout and exhaustion. From personal experience I can say burnout sucks. Travel always leaves me so fulfilled and re-energized that I am invigorated when I jump back into the grind. I don’t think I would be able to maintain the pace I do or my sanity without taking this time to escape. Phil Knight writes in his book, ShoeDog, “Maybe the only cure for any burnout, I thought, is to just work harder.” I used to agree, but after I started traveling more, I don’t agree. Rather than running myself into the ground, I try to take the time to recharge before I am completely spent. This is when I start planning my next adventure.

My travels have left me with a stronger sense of self, larger ambitions for life and a broader outlook on the world. I am fortunate enough now to have the luxury to travel often, even if it’s just a quick weekend getaway. But even as a struggling 20-something what extra money I did have went to saving up for a trip so I could explore the world.

For other Type A entrepreneurs like myself, always on the brink of burnout, I would remind you that you have one life, make the most of it. Find your passion and make time for it. For me it’s my crazy adventures - skydiving, shark diving, ATV-ing, Spartan races, white water rafting, etc. You name it I’ve tried it. Adventures give me what I need the most when I’m facing burnout…an adrenaline high and a much needed breath of fresh air.
