Lights/Ditto

If you aren’t familiar with Miccoli, you soon will be, as the band’s single – “Lights” – was featured by Billboard a few days ago. “Lights,” which drops on May 5, is from Miccoli’s soon-to-be-released EP 1/2, which drops on May 12.

Miccoli is composed of twin brothers Adriano and Alessandro, and sister, Francesca. The band hails from the U.K.

Stylistically, Miccoli would probably be defined as adult alt-rock. The band’s sound is influenced by Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Simon and Garfunkel, with elements from Motown tossed in for flavor. If you listen to “Lights” closely, you can hear the influence of The Police in the vocals, along with vestiges of the po-mo blues indicative of Simon and Garfunkel. For that matter, even though “Lights” is a light, upbeat tune, listeners can pick out the various influences that have combined to produce Miccoli’s unique sound.

“Lights” starts out with guitar and keyboards, then the vocals join in and the melody, which is zestfully airy, takes off. The melody carries the energetic feel of an updated Firehouse tune. The vocals are smooth and dulcet, and the harmonies are wonderful, providing the song with a gracefully layered depth that’s just right for the melody. Not too heavy, but not too light; there’s a fine line that has to be walked so as not to dilute the overall musical effect, the comprehensive sound.

Miccoli found the sweet spot.

Because the melody is simple and uncomplicated, the song is extremely appealing. Miccoli takes advantage of the simple melody, building it just enough as the music progresses, adding seamless transitions. Whoever arranged the song has a strong musical sensibility, an awareness of what works well and what doesn’t.

Good stuff!

In support of the EP, Miccoli will be touring the U.S. for a week during May. If you have the opportunity, you should certainly attend one of their concerts. Until then, enjoy “Lights.” Based on the rich voices, the exquisite melody and the excellent musicianship demonstrated on the single, the EP should open up a whole new world of listening pleasure.
