Baby Girl Born 5 Weeks After Her Twin Brother

Doctors describe it as "delayed interval delivery."

A couple has welcomed twins more than five weeks apart in Knoxville.

According to WBIR 10 News, Kristen Miller, who was pregnant with twins due in June, was at church when she began having contractions. Since she was only 22 weeks along at the time, doctors delayed labor. Baby Micah held out for two more weeks before making his big entrance, but Kristen’s doctors were able to keep his twin sister, Madelyn, from arriving. She decided to join her brother five-and-a-half weeks later.

Doctors describe the process of welcoming the twins weeks apart as "delayed interval delivery." Though it was an appropriate option for Kristen, Dr. Kristina Shumard from the University of Tennessee's Medical Center told WBIR 10 News that it's hard to find a "really good candidate" for such a delivery.

WBIR 10 News reports that Kristen, her husband Ian and their two new additions will be in the NICU for at least another two months and that both premature babies are “doing as well as to be expected.” Dr. Kimberly Fortner, also from the university's medical center, said their arrival has been quite an adventure.

“It’s been amazing and exciting,” she said.
