Here's some proof that superhero fans DGAF about critics' opinions of their movies.
Despite lackluster reviews, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" performed well at the box office this weekend, bringing in $170.1 million domestically. It took the top spot away from "Zooptia," which brought in a total of $23 million. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" landed in third with $18 million.
The worldwide total for "Batman v Superman" was $424.1 million, as the Zack Snyder-directed film opened in 17 international territories, including China, Japan and the United Kingdom. The flick had the best opening day of the year in the U.K., earning $9 million on 1,700 screens on Friday, according to Forbes. It was also the biggest Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. opening day of all time in India, with $2.54 million on 1,372 screens.
"Batman v Superman" didn't impress reviewers, and the movie had a 29 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Sunday. ("Green Lantern" earned 26 percent, just saying.) But clearly die-hard fans didn't want to miss a battle between Ben Affleck the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel.
Affleck's sad reaction to bad reviews went viral, but Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, said the audience's response is what matters most.
“They’re the ones who are buying tickets, they’re the ones who want to see more of this kind of story or not," he told Yahoo, "and so the audience’s voice is loudest and after this weekend the audience, at least partly, will have spoken.”
And speak they did. Although the film's production budget was $250 million, there's no doubt that "Batman v Superman" will gross much more than that domestically in the coming weeks. So, Ben, let's put a smile on that face.
