Five bicyclists were killed after their riding group was struck in a hit-and-run near Kalamazoo, Michigan, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
A blue Chevy pickup truck plowed into the group of cyclists in Cooper Township on Tuesday, officials told WZZM 13.
After announcing that five people were pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday night, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting released the names of those killed on Wednesday:
Debra Ann Bradley, 53, a mother and former nurse from Augusta.
Melissa Ann Fevig-Hughes, 42, a mother from Augusta.
Suzanne Joan Sippel, 56, a data manager from Augusta.
Fred “Tony” Nelson, 73, a grandfather from Kalamazoo.
Lorenz John (Larry) Paulik, 74, also a grandfather from Kalamazoo.
Three were Catholic parishioners of the Diocese of Kalamazoo, WOOD TV reported.
Getting said four additional people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and that everyone hit by the blue Chevy was an adult, contrary to earlier reports.
The driver, 50-year-old Charlie E. Pickett, was charged with five counts of second degree murder on Thursday. Pickett, from Battle Creek, Michigan, also faces four counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment.
Officers received calls 30 minutes before the crash from citizens concerned about the way Pickett was driving, Getting said. He fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended by police, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told local stations, according to The Associated Press.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder expressed his condolences in a statement on Wednesday.
Law enforcement did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post's requests for comment.
