Unlike America, Canada Is Giving A Woman Her Own Bank Note

• A woman will appear on a new Canadian note from 2018.
• In the U.S., a woman will share the $10 bill with Alexander Hamilton.
• Some say a woman should replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 instead.

There is finally a way for Americans to see a woman on their money -- move to Canada! The United States' northern neighbor celebrated International Woman's Day by announcing that a woman will be the face of its new currency.

"Women are and have always been instrumental in our country," Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau said. Though Queen Elizabeth II appears on the CA$20 note, no Canadian woman has ever received the distinction.

The bill will be released in 2018. Canadians can nominate women to honor on the Bank of Canada's website. Only Canadians who died at least 25 years ago will be considered.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a proud feminist, has made gender equality a focus of his administration.

Across the border, the U.S. Treasury announced last year that a woman would share a spot on the $10 bill with current honoree Alexander Hamilton. Many people were unhappy with this decision, arguing that a woman should get her own bill. Some suggested that she should replace Andrew Jackson on the $20.

"Jackson didn’t even like paper money and he pursued wrong-headed and disastrous economic policies," The Washington Post noted.

Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Ben Carson's mom have all been floated as potential honorees. The new note will be available in 2020.
