When embattled Fox News chief Roger Ailes left the cable news channel over the summer amid sexual harassment allegations, he began advising GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
At least one Fox News host is not happy about that. “I’m disappointed in Roger going to work for the Trump campaign,” Fox News host Chris Wallace told the Los Angeles Times in an interview after Wednesday’s presidential debate. Wallace, the moderator of the third debate, received mostly positive reviews from colleagues and viewers for providing the closest thing to a substantive forum.
But when Wallace was first named as the final debate’s only moderator, many raised concerns over his former boss’ coziness with the Trump campaign.
“I haven’t talked to [Ailes] since he left, and I won’t talk to him,” Wallace added. He described how Fox News spent years fighting claims it was an extension of the Republican Party, and Ailes’ new gig doesn’t do much to ease those concerns.
“We aren’t,” Wallace said. “Anybody who watches me on ‘Fox News Sunday’ knows that I’m not. I think it has given people who don’t like Fox News in the first place something to talk about. It allows people to say, ‘I told you so,’ when it’s not really true.”
According to Vanity Fair’s Sarah Ellison and New York magazine’s Gabriel Sherman, Ailes and Trump reportedly had a falling out in recent weeks over debate prep, and are no longer on speaking terms. Ailes’ lawyer denied that the two men had a disagreement, and said the former Fox News chief had never advised Trump on debate prep.
