Dad Discusses Wife's 4 Miscarriages To Show Why Partners Need Support, Too

"Dads have the same emotions."

When a couple experiences a miscarriage, it’s devastating for both parents, but conversation surrounding pregnancy loss tends to focus solely on the person who was pregnant.

In this video from a U.K.-based miscarriage support and research center, dad Al Ferguson opens up about his experience when his wife first had a miscarriage.

“I would have benefitted from somebody saying to me, ‘Tell your wife how you feel. Don’t say you’re fine,’” said Ferguson, who is the founder of The Dad Network. He added that when he finally had the emotional conversation with his wife, she felt much better and less isolated after the loss.

After that first miscarriage, Ferguson’s wife Jen suffered three more. “Looking back it’s staggering how many people just avoided it with me,” he recalled. “Dads have the same emotions, they have the same experience except from the physical side of miscarriage. There has to be a focus on both mom and dad for dealing and coping with miscarriage.”

Here’s to supporting all parents in the aftermath of loss.
