Daphne, a black and white pointer mix, was at a dog park adjacent to the site of the shooting, when she ran away after being “scared off by the gunshots,” according to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, which assisted in the search.

An Alexandria police officer found the dog early Thursday, according to Abbie Hubbard, the League’s deputy director.

“She is being reunited with her pet sitter, right in front of me,” Hubbard told HuffPost Thursday morning, saying that Daphne’s owner was out of town.

“I can tell you that Daphne is very delighted,” Hubbard added.

The Animal Welfare League, as well as other animal rescue groups in the Washington area, helped spread the word about the missing dog on social media.

Alexandria Police did not immediately return a request for comment.

Wednesday morning, a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice, wounding six people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). Scalise was in critical condition at a Washington hospital as of Thursday morning.
