Donald Trump wants to make football great again.

The presidential candidate on Sunday slammed the quintessentially American sport and the National Football League as "boring" and "soft."

“It’s boring. Although I love [New England Patriots quarterback] Tom Brady -- but it’s become soft, like our country has become soft," Trump said at a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada.

"We’re going bad, folks, we’re going soft, just like the NFL. Am I right?” he added, to cheers from the audience.

The real estate mogul, who continues to lead the race for the Republican presidential nomination, suggested that referees throw too many penalty flags because they are trying to impress their wives and girlfriends.

"I watched yesterday, so many flags!" he exclaimed.

Moments before launching into this critique, Trump touted his business acumen by noting that he spent his time reading "deals" over the weekend, rather than watching football like others do.

"I read deals over the weekend. Other people read novels or watch football. I read deals," he said.
