Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf refuses to let Donald Trump's comments about her city slide.

Trump said last month in a New York Times Magazine interview that Oakland, California, is one of "the most dangerous" places in the world, leading Schaaf to speak out in defense of the east Bay Area city. She doubled down on her sentiment while chatting with The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

"As someone who was born and raised in Oakland and who is the Oakland mayor, [Trump's comments] pissed me off," she told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani.

Schaaf pointed to the discriminatory tone of his comments, which incorrectly placed Oakland and Ferguson, Missouri, above several other cities that have higher murder rates. In fact, neither place is one of the top 50 "most dangerous" cities in the world.

"It was so ignorant, and frankly, it had racist overtones," she said. "The fact that he picked Oakland and Ferguson, two historically black cities, to say that they were the most dangerous places in the world. I thought that was very ignorant and reckless. And my response, I still stand by it today, the most dangerous place in America is Donald Trump's mouth."

Schaaf, who lauded Hillary Clinton's involvement in Oakland, explained that Trump's lack of experience in dealing with disadvantaged families is just one of the reasons the presumptive GOP nominee isn't fit for the presidency.

"It's so important, in a city like Oakland, that we have someone in the White House that actually cares about and understands what is happening in the lives of our most vulnerable families, the people that are struggling," she said. "And those seem to be the people that Donald Trump does not care about and certainly has no knowledge of."

The mayor added that she has met voters from both sides of the ideological spectrum -- from supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to "lifelong Republicans" -- who are coalescing around Clinton to prevent a Trump presidency.

"There is a serious danger, that we didn't really take very seriously months ago, of Donald Trump being the next president of the United States," she said. "And this is a man who does not have temperament, the intelligence, the experience, the knowledge to be our great nation's leader."

Editor's note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims -- 1.6 billion members of an entire religion -- from entering the U.S.
