Dutch Crane Collapse Crushes Houses, Injures 20

Witnesses recorded shocking video of the accident.

At least 20 people were injured Monday when two cranes and a section of a bridge collapsed onto a row of houses in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands, according to a Reuters report citing a Dutch broadcaster.

The crane was attempting to lift the portion of bridge into place over a waterway. In video shot by a witness, a woman screams as the cranes and bridge section topple over and land on a row of homes, apparently crushing them.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reports that many of the victims are seriously injured.

Another video, shot from a different angle, shows that the construction cranes were on a barge when they collapsed. Dutch news website RTL Nieuws reports that the accident occurred during renovations to the Queen Juliana Bridge, which has been undergoing work since April.

Footage shot on the street near the scene of the accident shows several houses totally destroyed by the fallen cranes and section of bridge, with severe damage to other buildings nearby. Dutch news site Studio Alphen reports that at least one person was pulled from the rubble alive.
