Emma Watson Calls Watching U.S. Election From The Sidelines 'Excruciating'

Emma Watson might not be eligible to vote in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, but that doesn’t mean she’s without an opinion.

As a prominent activist for gender equality and the face of the UN’s HeForShe campaign, Watson is understandably troubled by Donald Trump’s unrelenting misogynistic rhetoric, not to mention the multiple allegations of sexual assault against the Republican presidential candidate that have surfaced in recent weeks.

Writing in a Facebook post shared across social media platforms Tuesday, the “Harry Potter” actress expressed how “excruciating” it is to watch an election with an undeniably global influence, especially for women and girls, and not participate.

“America is my second home. I have friends there that I think of as family. It has been excruciating to sit on the sidelines in the months leading up to this election,” Watson wrote. “Goodness, I wish I could cast a vote.”

“The next president will be able to make decisions about women, about their bodies, about how they are treated at work, on university campuses and at school, about how men treat women and about their rights as citizens,” she continued. “These decisions affect how young people form their ideas of gender. These decisions will affect whether we believe equality is an idea that matters.”
