12 Ways Florida Makes Up For Its Crazy Reputation With Great Food

Two words: Key. Lime.

Of all the states that make up the U.S., Florida is definitely the one with the biggest (read: craziest) reputation. It might be home to some of the best beaches and Disney World, but the first thing most people think of when Florida comes up is the plethora of strange crimes that happen in this Southern state. That, and loads of retirees.

But jokes and entertainment are not all Florida has to offer the rest of the country. Florida's culinary gifts actually make up for all of that craziness -- and maybe even its voting mishaps. This great state produces many amazing things to eat, and for us that's enough. Don't believe us? See for yourself.

1. In Florida, the avocados are the size of your face.

This is not an exaggeration. Plus, most of the time they're free because they grow in everyone's back yard.

2. Alligator is a real option on menus.

From the looks of them, gators might not seem like the best choice for dinner, but their tail meat is really tender -- just like chicken. There are over a million of these reptiles domiciling in Florida, but the ones served at restaurants are commercially raised.

3. The grocery store chain Publix offers some of the best subs in the country.

Even better than Pot Belly's. Yes, we said it.

4. They have seasonal strawberries when nobody else does.

When everyone else in the country is surviving on months and months of apples during the fall and winter, Florida is enjoying it's hearty strawberry season. And at many of the you-pick strawberry farms, you can often order a bowl of berries with a mountain of whipped cream on top. It's basically the best thing in the world.

5. ALL THE FRESH SEAFOOD.

We're talking just-caught fish, plus some of the best oysters, scallops and lobster in the country. Oh, and then there's all the shrimp.

6. Two words: Key. Lime.

7. One bite of a Cuban sandwich and you will forget your name.

It's that good.

8. Actually, all the Cuban food is that good.

Croquetas, cortaditos, empanadas, we could go on and on. But then we wouldn't have a chance to talk about the great Peruvian food. Or Mexican food. Or Salvadorian food. There's a lot of great food coming out of the Americas, and Florida is lucky enough to be a host to a lot of it.

9. You can drink smoothies year round because it never gets cold.

Winning.

10. Star fruits are not only adorable, but they're one of Florida's best kept secrets.

These star-shaped fruits are found only in Florida and Hawaii within the United States. They are crunchy and juicy at the same time -- and can be eaten out of hand or used in a variety of recipes.

11. Florida oranges.

We couldn't have a list about Florida's great food and not mention the state's citrus.

12. And then there are the stone crabs, which are the best thing to come out of the ocean.

Way better than lobster. Plus, the mustard sauce they get served with is tops.
